It was later misattributed to Palma il Vecchio , then to Giovanni Cariani , until Roberto Longhi reattributed it as by Titian, which is now the critical consensus. It depicts a woman half length, facing the viewer, with her torso slightly twisted to give a sense of movement. One hand holds her black dress over her white shift, with a generous cleavage. The woman s physical type recurs in several other works by the artist, such as Flora Titian Flora and Woman with a Mirror she may have been Titian s mistress, or simply a recurring model. Portrait of a Young Woman is an unfinished painting of around 1603, attributed to Rubens . It may be connected with a commission from Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua mentioned in Rubens letters, during the latter s time in Italy and Spain, to paint aristocratic Spanish ladies to add to the duke s gallery of beauties . Its subject s name is unknown. Two red seals on its back place it in Venice early in the 19th century and then in the collection of Sir John Hanmer at Bettisfield Park in Wrexham by the 1840s. An anonymous buyer bought it in 1986 and he offered it for sale in December 2009 at Sotheby s , at which point it was given an estimate of up to 6 million, but it failed to sell. In January 2011 an export bar was placed on it until March 2011 with a possible extension to May 2011 to allow time for a British museum to raise 1 million to purchase it. It was an official periodical of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association , then the LDS Church s organization for adolescent females. Young Woman s Journal was founded in 1889 by Susa Young Gates , a volunteer worker within the Young Women Organization YLMIA . Throughout its history, the periodical was edited by the general leadership board of the YLMIA under the direction of the organization s general presidency and published monthly. In 1929 , the magazine was absorbed by the Improvement Era , an official publication of the YLMIA and the church s Young Men Organization equivalent organization for male adolescents. It is in the Galleria Borghese in Rome . The portrait appears to have been influenced by the Mona Lisa , painted by Leonardo between 1503 and 1506 ref Barchiesi and Minozzi ref . The work was of uncertain attribution until recent times. In the 1760 inventory of the Gallery, the subject of the painting was identified as Saint Catherine of Alexandria and attributed to Perugino . A restoration of the painting in 1934 36 confirmed art historian Roberto Longhi s hypothesis that the work was by Raphael, and the removal of heavy repainting revealed the unicorn , traditionally a symbol of purity in medieval romance, in place of a Saint Catherine s wheel ref Barchiesi and Minozzi ref . Later restoration work on the painting in 1959 revealed the image of a dog, even earlier than the unicorn, also a symbol of chastity and conjugal fidelity. Portrait of a Young Venetian Woman is a small bust length oil on elm panel painting by the German artist Albrecht D rer from 1505. It was executed, along with a number of other high society portraits, during his second visit to Italy. The woman wears a patterned gown with tied on sleeves that show the chemise beneath. Her hair frames her face in soft waves, and back hair is confined in a small draped cap. The work s harmony and grace is achieved through its mixtures of tones, from her elegant pale flesh, to her reddish blond hair, black and pearl necklace, and a patterned and highly fashionable dress all of which are highlighted against a flat black background. ref name Bailey86 Bailey, 86 ref It is similar in pose and colour tone to his c 1507 A German Woman from Venice , while at least at least two studies of Venetian women are known, both of which are very daring. It is housed in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche , in Urbino . The picture portrays an unknown noblewoman over a near black background, showing some Leonardo da Vinci Leonardesque influences. Although only recently attributed to Raphael, it is ranked among the best portraits by his hand. The neatness of the large areas of colour which emerge in lighter tones from the background, and the analytical treatment of the details of the woman s clothing are characteristic of Raphael. The dispersive effect of this attention to detail is fully compensated by the tones of colour used here in a fairly limited range which unify the composition as a whole. X ray analysis have showed the presence of an early Raphael years drawing under the painting, showing a female, young face with soft features, with later modifications.
