  1. Waw-consecutive

The Waw consecutive or Vav consecutive is a grammatical construction in Classical Hebrew . It involves prefixing a verb form with the letter waw letter waw in order to change its Lexical aspect aspect . Waw conjunctive This Hebrew prefix, spelled with the letter hebrew waw and depending on phonetic environment variously pronounced and transcribed w , wa or u , ref group n The variations of vocalisation and the alternation of waw from a consonant to a vowel belong to regular patterns of assimilation, depending on the initial consonant of the following word. The following letter may also be marked with dagesh a dot in the centre of the letter indicating gemination and transcribed by doubling the consonant , which may mark an assimilated definite article or be a marker of waw consecutive in particular. But in unpointed Hebrew these are all written identically with waw . ref is frequently a waw conjunctive roughly equivalent to English and Unicode y m w layl hebrew Day and night. Consecutive verb syntax Used with verbs, the prefix has a double function. It is still conjunctive, but also has the effect of altering the tense and aspect of the verb. Weingreen gives the following ... Unicode yi p with a prefixed waw Unicode mar hammele e d ar YHWH wayyi p e ha am b e eq ... the people in righteousness. 1. Waw-conjunctive

A conjunctive waw or vav conjunctive Hebrew vav hakhivur is the use of Hebrew vav letter as a conjunction to join two parts of speech. It is distinct from waw consecutive which is a verb construction. Conjunction of two nouns Primarily two noun s may be joined by conjunctive vav without equation, for example Moshe v Aron Moses and Aaron . Conjunctive vav may however indicate hendiadys where two nouns are equated. An example is found in two examples from Leviticus 25 where the nouns ger stranger, and toshav sojourner, are joined by conjunctive waw and usually construed as a hendiadys. However, in Numbers 35 15, each noun is accompanied by the repeated prepositional prefix lo to, as in to the stranger and vav to the sojourner, which indicates two distinct concepts. ref Jeffrey Stackert Rewriting the Torah literary revision in Deuteronomy and the Holiness Legislation Mohr Siebeck 9783161492983 2007 Page 89 90 footnote 152 In these examples from Lev 25, these two nouns are connected by a conjunctive waw and are usually construed as a hendiadys however, in Num 35 15, each noun is accompanied by the preposition l , suggesting that they are understood as distinct from each other. Toshav also appears in Lev 22 10 25 6, 40, 45. Gen 23 attests the unparalled.. ref Conjunction of two verbs Waw conjunctive may also be used or omitted between two verbs. In imperative sentences such as sit and wait the use of the waw between the two verbs is particularly common in maskilic literature, but there are no clear cut semantic considerations regulating the use of vav conjunctive. ref Lily Kahn The verbal system in late enlightenment Hebrew p271 ref References reflist category Hebrew grammar ...   more details

  1. Elk Camp, California

Elk Camp was an American settlement between Redwood Creek Humboldt County Redwood Creek and the Klamath River , fifteen miles northwest of Fort Anderson in modern Humboldt County, California . ref http www.militarymuseum.org ElkCp.html The California State Military Museum, Historic California Posts Elk Camp ref In May 1862, under threat of Indian raids on its cattle, the local settlers urgently requested military protection. Post at Elk Camp , a temporary post, garrisoned from Fort Ter Waw , was probably established within the settlement. A trail was to be cut through the forest from Fort Ter Waw to Elk Camp, to link up with the forts south of the Klamath River. ref The Indians have recently made an appearance there and are killing their cattle. The settlers are much alarmed and have sent in for protection, and until it can be afforded have sent their families to Arcata. I have directed Captain Stuart, Second Infantry, California Volunteers, commanding at Fort Ter Waw, to send a detachment there of twenty men with an officer, and also to cut a trail direct to that point from Fort Ter Waw, the distance being about twenty miles. When this is completed it will open a short and sure line of communication between Fort Ter Waw and the posts to the south of the Klamath, which is urgently needed. excerpt from a letter written in Fort Humboldt, on May 20, 1862, from FRANCIS J.
