Misner , Kip Thorne Kip S. Thorne , and John Archibald Wheeler . Often considered the Bible of General Relativity by researchers for its prominence. It is frequently called MTW after its authors initials. Its size and shape are similar to a large telephone book. It was originally published by W. H. Freeman and Company in 1973. The book, a massive tome of over 1200 pages, covers many aspects of General Relativity and also considers alternatives to general relativity some extensions of it as well as experimental confirmations. The book is divided into two tracks , the second of which covers more advanced topics for more capable or determined students. MTW uses the Sign convention metric convention . A substantial fraction of the book consists of boxes which add supplementary substance to the already thorough main text. In quantum field theory , gauge gravitation theory is the effort to extend Yang Mills theory , which provides a universal description of the fundamental interactions, to describe Gravitation gravity . In theoretical physics , Whitehead s theory of gravitation was introduced by the distinguished mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead in 1922 . Principal features of the theory Whitehead s theory is said to feature a prior geometry . It has the curious feature that electromagnetic waves propagate along null geodesic s of the physical spacetime as defined by the metric tensor metric determined from geometrical measurements and timing experiments , while gravitational waves propagate along null geodesics of a flat background represented by the metric tensor of Minkowski spacetime . The gravitational potential can be expressed entirely in terms of waves retarded along the background metric, like the Li nard Wiechert potential in electromagnetic theory. A cosmological constant can be introduced by changing the background metric to a de Sitter space de Sitter or anti de Sitter space anti de Sitter metric. This was first suggested by G. Temple in 1923. Temple s suggestions on how to do this were criticized by C. B. Rayner in 1955. Tests of Whitehead s theory Whitehead s theory makes the same predictions as general relativity regarding the Category Tests of general relativity four classical solar system tests gravitational red shift , light bending, perihelion shift, Shapiro delay Shapiro time delay , and was regarded as a viable competitor of general relativity for several decades. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In economics , Reilly s law of retail gravitation states that larger cities will have larger spheres of influence than smaller ones, meaning people travel farther to reach a larger city. The law presumes the geography of the area is flat without any rivers, roads or mountains to alter a consumer s decision of where to travel to buy goods. It also assumes consumers are indifferent between the actual cities. The law was developed by William J. Reilly in 1931. math Ba Bb Pa Pb Db Da square math A plain English paraphrase would be that the balance or Break Point math BP math is equal to the Distance math d math between two places, divided by the following Unity or Total math 1 math plus the Square Root of, the size of Place One math p 1 math divided by the size of Place Two math p 2 math . math d math is distance and math p 1 math and math p 2 math are the sizes of the places between which the distance exists the answer will give the distance from math p 2 math , also called a break point. What is the break point? As an example after leaving a store a you remember something that you wanted to buy it just so happens that you are headed towards an alternative store b . The break point can be thought of as the point after which you would travel towards store b instead of store a because of its notional gravity . This would happen sooner, for example, if store b is an equivalent store but with greater square footage, suggesting that you are more likely to go to store b for greater available utility. This notional gravity can be influenced by a number of things, but square footage is simple and effective.
