  1. Air trapping

Nofootnotes date August 2010 Air trapping , also called gas trapping , is an abnormal retention of air in the lungs after expiration. It is observed in obstructive lung diseases such as asthma , bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease . The cause is obstruction such that the patient is unable to expel air completely. Air trapping is a cause of obstructive pattern spirometry results, leading to an elevated residual volume . Air trapping is often incidentally diagnosed on computed tomography CT scanning. The only way to absolutely differentiate air trapping from emphysema is by taking expiratory images. On expiratory films, retained hyperlucent gas will be visualised in cases of air trapping. Air trapping represents poorly aerated lung, but on its own is clinically benign. It is a common problem for smokers who dive. On diving the lung volume collapses and pushes air into the poorly aerated regions. On arising from a deep depth, these air trapped areas of lung expand. This places great pressure on the lung tissue which can rupture. References Javier Lucaya A. L. Baert Janet L. 1. Spin trapping

Spin trapping in chemistry is an analytical technique employed in the detection and identification of short lived free radicals . Spin trapping involves the addition of radical to a nitrone spin trap resulting in the formation of a spin adduct, a nitroxide based persistent radical, that can be detected using electron paramagnetic resonance EPR spectroscopy. The spin adduct usually yields a distinctive EPR spectrum characteristic of a particular free radical that is trapped. The identity of the radical can be inferred based from the EPR spectral profile of their respective spin adducts such as the g value, but most importantly, the hyperfine coupling hyperfine coupling constants of relevant nuclei. Unambiguous assignments of the identity of the trapped radical can often be made by using stable isotope substitution of the radicals parent compound, so that further hyperfine couplings are introduced or altered. The most commonly used spin traps are alpha phenyl N tertiary butyl nitrone PBN and 5,5 dimethyl pyrroline N oxide DMPO . More rarely, C nitroso spin traps such as 3,5 Dibromo 4 nitrosobenzenesulfonic acid DBNBS can be used as spin traps often additional hyperfine information is derived, but at a cost of specificity due to facile non radical addition of many compounds to C nitroso species, and subsequent oxidation of the resulting hydroxylamine . 5 Diisopropoxyphosphoryl 5 methyl 1 pyrroline N oxide DIPPMPO spin trapping has been used in measuring superoxide production in mitochondria. The use of radical addition reactions to detect short lived radicals was first proposed by E. G. Janzen in 1965. It is worth noting that the radical adduct or products such as the hydroxylamine can often be stable enough to allow non EPR detection techniques. The groups of London, and Berliner ... upon DBNBS trapping to isolate protein adducts for study. 1. Ion trapping

otheruses Ion trap The term ion trapping is used to describe the build up of a higher concentration of a chemical across a cell membrane due to the pKa value of the chemical and difference of pH across the cell membrane. Generally speaking, this results in basic chemicals accumulating in acidic bodily fluids such as the cytosol , and acidic chemicals to accumulate in basic fluids such as mastitic milk. Many Cell biology cells have other mechanisms to pump a molecule inside or outside the cell against the concentration gradient , but these processes are active ones, meaning that they require enzymes and consume cellular energy . In contrast, ion trapping does not require any enzyme or energy. It is similar to osmosis in that they both involve the semipermeable nature of the cell membrane. Cells have a more acidic pH inside the cell than outside gastric mucosa gastric mucosal cells being an exception . Therefore basic drugs like bupivacaine , pyrimethamine are more charged inside the cell than outside. The cell membrane is permeable to non ionized fat soluble molecules, ionized water soluble molecules cannot cross it easily. Once a non charged molecule of a basic chemical crosses the cell membrane to enter the cell, it becomes charged due to gaining a hydrogen ion because of the lower pH inside the cell, and thus becomes unable to cross back. Because transmembrane equilibrium must ... to pKa of dissolved drug, then 50 of the drug is ionized, another 50 is unionized. Ion trapping is the reason ... in urine , thus prolonging its actions. 1. Exon trapping

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Exon trapping is a molecular biology technique to identify potential exons in a fragment of eukaryote DNA of unknown intron exon structure. This is done to determine if the fragment is part of an expressed gene . The genomic fragment is inserted into the intron of a splicing Vector molecular biology vector consisting of a known exon intron exon sequence of DNA. If the fragment does not contain exons i.e., consists solely of intron DNA , it will be spliced out together with the vector s original intron. On the other hand, if exons are contained, they will be part of the mature mRNA after transcription with all intron material removed . The presence of trapped exons can be detected by an increase in size of the mRNA. The technique has largely been supplanted by the approach of DNA sequencing sequencing cDNA generated from mRNA and then using bioinformatics tools such as National Center for Biotechnology Information NCBI s BLAST server to determine the source of the sequence, thereby identifying the appropriate exon intron splice sites. 1. Gene trapping

Gene trapping is a high throughput approach that is used to introduce insertional mutations across the mammalian genome. It is performed with gene trap vectors whose principal element is a gene trapping cassette consisting of a promoterless reporter gene and or selectable genetic marker flanked by an upstream 3 splice site splice acceptor SA and a downstream transcription genetics transcription al termination sequence polyadenylation sequence polyA . When inserted into an intron of an expressed gene, the gene trap cassette is transcribed from the endogenous promoter of that gene in the form of a fusion transcript in which the exon s upstream of the insertion site is spliced in frame to the reporter selectable marker gene. Since transcription is terminated prematurely at the inserted polyadenylation site, the processed fusion transcript encodes a truncated and non functional version of the cellular protein and the reporter selectable marker. Thus, gene traps simultaneously inactivate and report the expression of the trapped gene at the insertion site, and provide a DNA tag gene trap sequence tag, GTST for the rapid identification of the disrupted gene . An international public consortium http www.genetrap.org International Gene Trap Consortium is centralizing the data and cell lines can be requested from them. References Gossler, A., A. L. 1. Macroscopic quantum self-trapping

multiple issues confusing July 2009 context July 2009 expert July 2009 In Introduction to quantum mechanics quantum mechanics , macroscopic quantum self trapping is a phenomenon occurring in the Phase matter state of matter called the Bose Einstein condensate between two superconductors linked by a non conducting barrier known as a Josephson effect Josephson junction . While the Quantum tunneling tunneling of a particle through classically forbidden barriers can be described by the particle s wave function , the wave function is merely a probability of tunneling. Although various factors can increase or decrease the probability of tunneling, one can not be certain that tunneling will never occur. When two condensates are placed in a double potential well and the phase and population differences are such that the system is in Mechanical equilibrium equilibrium , the population difference will remain fixed. This is not to say that tunneling does not occur rather, in the event that a particle tunnels through the barrier, another particle tunnels in the opposite direction. Because the identity of individual particles is lost in that case, no tunneling can be observed, and the system is considered to remain at Rest physics rest . 1. Measurements with Advanced Trapping Systems

Orphan date February 2009 MATS is an acronym standing for M easurements with an A dvanced T rapping S ystem, which is a Helmholtz research group for young investigators. It is funded by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres between the cooperating institutes Gesellschaft f r Schwerionenforschung mbH in Darmstadt GSI , Germany and the Department of Physics at the Johannes Gutenberg Universit t Mainz . The research subjects are experiments with stored and cooled ions. The development of new storing and cooling techniques for ions and, thereby, realizable precision experiments with these particles has rapidly become more important in the last few years. Among others, this is pointed out by the enfranchisement of several Nobel prizes on this field. The experiments and their applications are not only in the center of modern atomic physics but also in lots of other areas of natural sciences. At the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and the Gesellschaft f r Schwerionenforschung GSI at Darmstadt, precision experiments with stored and cooled ions are performed with a lot of experience. Especially Penning trap s are used for three dimensional inclusion of ions. At GSI, the Experimental Storage Ring ESR and the ion trap facility SHIPTRAP are used for investigations of stored and cooled radio nuclides. Further, the department of atomic physics runs the ion trap experiment ISOLTRAP at the online mass separator ISOLDE CERN in Geneva. ISOLTRAP allowed the measurement of the masses of more than 300 short lived nuclides with a precision up to m m 1.0E 8 in the last years. Currently, the ion trap experiment HITRAP is designed to allow analysis of hydrogen like ions, e.g. Uranium 91 . Finally, new perspectives and big challenges for experiments with cold anti protons and anti hydrogen are related to the future FLAIR facility at GSI.
