Die swell occurs in instances of polymer extrusion, in which a stream of polymeric material is forced through a Die manufacturing die , a specialized tool in manufacturing to shape or cut polymeric materials. Die swell is an instance where a polymer stream is compressed by entrance into a die, and is followed by a partial recovery or swell back to the former shape and volume of the polymer after exiting the die, hence the term die swell. Die swell is a phenomenon directly related to entropy and the relaxation of the polymer within the flow stream. Initially, a flow stream has a constant rate before entering the die, and the polymers within the stream occupy a roughly spherical conformation, minimizing entropy. Extrusion through the die causes an increase in flow rate through the polymer flow stream. As the polymer spends time inside the die and is subject to the much increased flow rate, the polymers lose the spherical shape, becoming longer due to the increased flow rate. Swell is a function of the number of Section bookbinding sections in the book, the kind of paper used, the style of sewing, and the thickness of the sewing thread. Human factors also influence swell, especially the force with which the bookbinder bones down, or flattens, each section after sewing. Prior to the 15 sup th sup century, swell in textblocks was accommodated, if it all, by shaping the wooden boards that formed a book s covers. The inner surface of each board would be lightly tapered along the spine edge, so that the removed wood created a space for the thicker paper along the sewn folds. By the 15 sup th sup century, though, the process of rounding and backing became common, and books were given their characteristic rounded spines and shoulders. In normal seismic recordings, the term swell filter refers to filtering the acoustic noise, created by waves, out of the seismic recording. High resolution seismics and subbottom profiling Very high resolution seismics reflection seismology is applied to make detailed acoustic profiles of a sea floor or lake floor. Acoustic sources used include air gun, water gun, sleeve gun, sparker and boomer. The frequency used in this field ranges from 100 Hz to 10.000 Hz. Roughly speaking, the sound of a guitar note is characterized by an initial attack where the pick or nail produces higher pitched overtones over the top of the fundamental frequency fundamental note, followed by a diminution of these overtones. Consequently, the end of the note is softer than the attack. Volume swells alter the tone of the note, reducing the treble tones of the attack and allowing the softer tone that follows to sustain. The technique is often executed by the little finger of the guitarist which is wrapped around the volume potentiometer pot of the guitar.
