The general structure is math R 1R 2C CR 3 O R 4 math with R an alkyl or an aryl group. Enol ethers and enamine s are so called activated alkenes or electron rich alkenes because the oxygen atom donates electrons to the double bond by forming a resonance structure with the corresponding oxonium ion . This property makes them reactive substrates in certain organic reaction s such as the Diels Alder reaction . An enol ether can be considered the ether of the corresponding enolate , hence the name. It is a colorless liquid that is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with most organic solvents. It is also used as an oxygenate gasoline additive . Diisopropyl ether is sometimes represented by the abbreviation DIPE . Safety Diisopropyl ether tends to form explosive organic peroxide peroxides upon standing in air for long periods years . This reaction proceeds more easily than for ethyl ether , due to the secondary carbon next to the oxygen atom, which makes storage of diisopropyl ether more dangerous. The stored solvent should therefore be tested for the presence of peroxides more often recommended once every 3 months for diisopropyl ether vs. once every 12 months for ethyl ether ref name OSH Answers Organic peroxides http www.ccohs.ca oshanswers chemicals organic organic peroxide.html ref . 1. Methylthiomethyl ether

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 In organic chemistry a methylthiomethyl MTM ether is a protective group for Hydroxide hydroxyl groups . Hydroxyl groups are present in many chemical compounds and they must be protected during oxidation , acylation , halogenation , Dehydration reaction dehydration and other reactions to which they are susceptible. Many kinds of protective group s for hydroxyl groups have been developed and used in organic chemistry, but the number of protective groups for tertiary hydroxyl groups, which are susceptible to acid catalyzed dehydration , is still small because of their poor reactiveness. They can be easily protected with MTM ether s and recovered in good yield. To introduce an MTM ether to a hydroxyl group, two methods are mainly used. One is a typical Williamson ether synthesis using an MTM halide as an MTM resource and sodium hydride NaH as a base. The other is a special method, in which dimethyl sulfoxide DMSO and acetic anhydride Ac sub 2 sub O are used. In this case, the reaction proceeds with Pummerer rearrangement MTM ether s have another advantage. They are removed by neutral but toxic mercuric chloride , to which most other ethers are stable. As a result, the selective deprotection of polyfunctional molecules becomes possible using MTM ether s as the protective group s for their hydroxyl groups.
