Internationally it is called a club steak . In the United States and Canada it is also known as strip loin , shell steak , Kansas City strip or New York strip steak. Cut from the short loin, the strip steak consists of a muscle that does little work, and so it is particularly tender, though not as tender as the nearby rib eye or beef tenderloin tenderloin fat content of the strip is somewhere between these two cuts . Unlike the nearby tenderloin, the short loin is a sizable muscle, allowing it to be cut into the larger portions. When still attached to the bone, and with a piece of the tenderloin also included, the strip steak becomes a T bone steak or a Porterhouse steak , the difference being that the Porterhouse has a larger portion of tenderloin included. The strip steak can be sold with or without the bone, but bone in strips are generally better because they are usually thicker, and the bone conveys heat to the steak. Strip steaks can be substituted for most recipes calling for T bone and porterhouse steaks, and sometimes for fillet and rib eye steaks. The strip mill was a major innovation, with the first being erected at Ashland, Kentucky in 1923. This provided a continuous process, cutting out the need to pass the plates over the rolls and to double them, as in a pack mill . At the end the strip was cut with a guillotine shear or rolled into a coil. Early hot rolling strip mills did not produce strip suitable for tinplate, but in 1929 cold rolling began to be used to reduce the gauge further. The first strip mill in the United Kingdom was opened at Ebbw Vale in 1938 with an annual output of 200,000 tons. The strip mill had several advantages over pack mills It was cheaper due to having all parts of the process, starting with blast furnace s on the same site. Softer steel could be used. Larger sheets could be produced at lower cost and this reduced cost and enabled tinplate and steel sheet to be used for more purposes. It was capital intensive, rather than labour intensive. Image Zimbabwe strip road.jpg right frame A strip road in Zimbabwe in the 1960s A strip road is a dirt road with two narrow, parallel strips of asphalt , one for each wheel. Roads of this kind are found in parts of southern Africa, particularly Zimbabwe . When two cars on a strip road approach each other from opposite directions, each is expected to move away from the centre of the road and use only one strip until the other car has passed. Asphalt strip roads were built in Southern Rhodesia , as Zimbabwe was then known, from 1933 onwards as a relatively inexpensive way of opening up the country for development. Asphalt was chosen after an early experiment with concrete strip roads proved too costly. By 1938, strip roads covered a total distance of 1,890 kilometres, including an unbroken stretch linking the capital, Salisbury today called Harare , with the southern border town of Beitbridge . By 1945 the total exceeded 3,300 kilometres. ref From Dirt Tracks to Modern Highways Towards a History of Roads and Road Transportation in Colonial Zimbabwe, by Alois S. Mlambo. Unreferenced date April 2009 Image Strip farming in Wisconsin, USA, 1957.jpg thumb 300px Strip farming in Wisconsin, USA, 1957 For the Medieval practice of strip farming, see open field system . Strip cropping is a method of agriculture farming used when a slope is too steep or too long, or when other types of farming may not prevent soil erosion . Strip cropping alternates strips of closely sown crops such as hay , wheat , or other small grains with strips of row crops, such as maize corn , soybean s, cotton , or sugar beet s. Strip cropping helps to stop soil erosion by creating natural dams for water, helping to preserve the strength of the soil. Certain layers of plants will absorb minerals and water from the soil more effectively than others. When water reaches the weaker soil that lacks the minerals needed to make it stronger, it normally washes it away. When strips of soil are strong enough to slow down water from moving through them, the weaker soil can t wash away like it normally would. Because of this, farmland stays fertile much longer. The term strip cropping also refers to a method of dry farming sometimes used in areas including parts of the Great Plains of the United States and the Canadian Prairies Prairies of Canada. To accumulate moisture in these dry areas, cropland is periodically left fallow. Typically, the fallow and planted areas are organized in parallel long, narrow strips that are oriented normal to the prevailing winds, in order to minimize the erosion of soil from the bare fields. Strip farming helps to prevent mass erosion by having the roots of crops hold onto the soil to prevent it from being washed away. History In the Middle Ages each person received several strips of land which may be distributed across many fields. In Great Britain this method of farming was replaced by enclosures after the Parliamentary Act . agri stub Category Agriculture Category Soil de Streifenanbau fi Kaistaviljely ... more details
