File Snotter.jpg thumb Snotter A snotter is a rope or tackle used in sailing to tension the sprit on a spritsail , or a sprit boom on a sprit boomed sail. It is also used in a Junk Rig junk rig . There are a great many variations on the snotter arrangement, and some more fastidious authors have referred to it as a snouter or snorter . The origin of the nautical term is obscure. Hauling on the snotter sets the tension in the spar and thus governs how the sail is set. On very small boats, typically with a single boomless spritsail, the snotter is a rope with eyes spliced into it, and is merely hooked into the fore end of the sprit and then jammed up the mast to force the upper end of the sprit into a pocket in the sail. Spritsail There are boomed spritsails , loose footed spritsails and boomless spritsails . Sprit Booms The most common sprit boom is found on a sprit boomed leg of mutton sail . Sprit booms have been combined with a leech spar called a club they have been used on foresails, like the jib . Some sailors have used a sprit boom on the standing lugsail . The Sea Bright Skiff is a development of the Jersey Skiff . It was developed on the northern shore of New Jersey to be used for fishing, by being launched through the surf, sailed to the fishing grounds, and returned through the breaking wave surf . Description The boat is slightly different from the Jersey Skiff by being more rounded and including a shorter freeboard. Both boats, serving a similar need, have very similar lines. The boat, however, is characterized by a nearly straight stem, rounded sides, a narrow flat bottom wider though than the Jersey Skiff , and a heart shaped Transom nautical transom . The boat was usually rigged with either a lug mainsail or sprit sail and small jib with an unstayed Mast sailing mast . The early fishing versions used an oar as the rudder, more modern versions, however, have a regular rudder & tiller . This boat has nearly disappeared from the shores of New Jersey except as used by lifeguard s rowing configuration only . Food is deliberately denatured when a substance, known as a denaturant , is added to render the food unpleasant to consume or poisonous. Aversive agent s primarily bitterant s and pungent pungent agents are used to produce an unpleasant flavor. For example, the bitterant denatonium might be added to food used in the laboratory , where the food is not intended for human consumption. A poison may be added as an even more powerful deterrent. For example, methanol is added to ethanol to produce denatured alcohol . The addition of poisonous methanol renders denatured alcohol unfit for consumption. File Jacob Hilsdorf Henry Thode 1906.jpg thumb Henry Thode. Henry Thode 13 January 1857, Dresden 19 November 1920 was a Germany German art historian . Biography He was an art historian at the time of the Weimar republic. He wrote against the prevailing ideas of the time that art from outside of Germany, such as French Impressionism was superior to traditional academic or native art. Thode believed that great German art should illustrate technical skill, realism and the German spirit. He also felt that art should be understood by all, not just academics and the bourgeois. Thode wrote a great deal about how the modern art of the Impressionists attempted to both destroy true German art and the true German sprit. His philosophies were very important in the formulation of the cultural policies of the Third Reich, especially in terms of degenerate art. The Landguard Fort Lifeboat is an example of early attempts to design an unsinkable vessel. Several years before the foundation of the RNLI , Richard Hall Gower had been addressing the special problems of Lifeboat rescue lifeboat design. Bayleys at Ipswich built one to his design, being paid for by public subscription initiated by Admiral Page . They launched her from the yard near Stoke Bridge in April 1821 and thoroughly tested her on the River Orwell Orwell . She took station at Landguard Fort, South of Felixstowe . There is a plan of this vessel in Gower s Original Observations . She had a long flat floor, flared out to project at both head and stern. She was steered by a long sweep over the stern. Fourteen copper clad water tight cases, five on each side and four down the mid line provided buoyancy. Oars and two foul weather sprit sails provided propulsion and there was provision for self draining when she was fully waterlogged. About 30 overall and 7 breadth, she was capable of supporting 25 men even when flooded. Her normal crew was six oarsmen and a coxswain . Gower remarked very emphatically that a coxswain should be in constant charge of her for without such an experienced man, she would be almost useless. References Gower, R. H. 1834 .
