It was in service with SJ from 1971 to 1976, after which it was used by some industrial railways. It is the only diesel locomotive to be built by Allm nna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget ASEA . The loco used a SEMT Pielstick diesel engine. ASEA used the same bogie s and electrical systems as on the Rc locomotive , while Thune of Norway built the mechanical parts. History ASEA had been dominating the Swedish market for electric locomotives , but NOHAB Nykvist & Holm had been dominating the diesel segment. In the late 1960s ASEA decided to enter the diesel market, and in 1969 SJ ordered five units, with delivery in 1971 72. They were dispatched in Borl nge . In 1976 SJ returned them back to ASEA due to them not being reliable enough and that SJ didn t want another diesel engine class. ASEA tried to sell the locos abroad, but only one was sold to Norway. The remaining were sold to industrial companies in Sweden, including the iron mills in Avesta and Hofors . History During the 1950s SJ saw the need for a new universal locomotive, since the SJ D D series was aging. In 1955 the SJ Ra Ra series had proved successful with bogie wheels. At the same time there was interest to make a locomotive that could be exported abroad. The result was an agreement between ASEA and SJ where six test engines were delivered. The testing of the Rb was successful and based on this exports were made to the Yugoslav Railways J class 441 and C ile Ferate Rom ne of Romania CFR class 40 . The result of the testing was the SJ Rc Rc locomotive that was produced in 360 copies for SJ, in addition to export to Amtrak , Norwegian State Railways Norges Statsbaner and Austrian Federal Railways sterreichische Bundesbahnen . The Rb series was in use on passenger and freight trains until the mid 1970s. Variations Rb1 was equipped with direct current DC motors with higher efficiency and thus more economical. The utilization of thyristor s could convert from the alternating current AC used in the railway electrification system of Sweden, and one of the Rb1 locos was rebuilt to thyristor in 1965, getting the designation Rb1T .
