The quasibiennialoscillation QBO is a Quasiperiodicity quasi periodic oscillation of the equator equatorial zonal and meridional zonal wind between easterlies and westerlies in the tropical stratosphere with a mean period of 28 to 29 months. The alternating wind regimes develop at the top of the lower stratosphere and propagate downwards at about convert 1 km 1 abbr on per month until they are dissipated at the tropical tropopause . Downward motion of the easterlies is usually more irregular than that of the westerlies. The amplitude of the easterly phase is about twice as strong as that of the westerly phase. At the top of the vertical QBO domain, easterlies dominate, while at the bottom, westerlies are more likely to be found. Theory The QBO was discovered in the 1950s, but its cause remained unclear for some time. Rawinsonde soundings showed that its phase was not related to the annual cycle , as is the case for all other stratospheric circulation patterns. In the 1970s it was recognized by Richard Lindzen and James Holton that the periodic wind reversal was driven by atmospheric wave s emanating from the tropical troposphere that travel upwards and are dissipated in the stratosphere by radiative cooling . The precise nature of the waves responsible for this effect was heavily debated in recent years, however, gravity wave s have come to be seen as a major contributor. Effects Effects of the QBO include mixing of stratospheric ozone by the secondary circulation caused by the QBO, modification of monsoon precipitation, and an influence on stratospheric circulation in northern hemisphere winter the sudden stratospheric warmings . refimprove date October 2009 In X ray astronomy , quasi periodic oscillation QPO is the manner in which the X ray light from an astronomical object flickers about certain frequencies. In these situations, the X rays are emitted near the inner edge of an accretion disk in which gas swirls onto a compact object such as a white dwarf , neutron star , or black hole . The QPO phenomenon promises to help astronomers understand the innermost regions of accretion disks and the masses, radii, and spin periods of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. QPOs could help test Albert Einstein s theory of general relativity which makes predictions that differ most from those of Newtonian gravity when the gravitational force is strongest or when rotation is fastest when a phenomenon called the Lense Thirring effect comes into play. However, the various explanations of QPOs remain controversial and the conclusions reached from their study remain provisional. A QPO is identified by performing a power spectrum of the time series of the X rays. A constant level of white noise is expected from the random variation of sampling the object s light. Systems that show QPOs sometimes also show nonperiodic noise that appears as a continuous curve in the power spectrum. A periodic pulsation appears in the power spectrum as a peak of power at exactly one frequency a Dirac delta function given a long enough observation . A QPO, on the other hand, appears as a broader peak, sometimes with a Lorentzian shape. What sort of variation with time could cause a QPO? For example, the power spectrum of an oscillating shot appears as a continuum of noise together with a QPO. An oscillating shot is a sinusoidal variation that starts suddenly and decays exponentially. A scenario in which oscillating shots cause ... time, the blob s mass decreases so that the oscillation decays. Often power spectra are formed ... give rise to a completely different kind of oscillation. Observations starting in 1996 with the Rossi ... more details

Image Parsley Curled.jpg right thumb 200px Parsley is an example of a biennial plant. A biennial plant is a flowering plant that takes two years to complete its biological lifecycle. In the first year the plant grows leaves, stems, and roots vegetative structures , then it enters a period of dormancy over the colder months. Usually the stem remains very short and the leaves are low to the ground, forming a rosette. Many biennials require a cold treatment, or vernalization , before they will flower. During the next spring or summer, the stem of the biennial plant elongates greatly, or bolts . The plant then flowers, producing fruits and seed s before it finally dies. There are far fewer biennials than either perennial plants or annual plants . Under extreme climatic conditions, a biennial plant may complete its life cycle in a very short period of time e.g. three or four months instead of two years . This is quite common in vegetable or flower seedlings that were exposed to cold conditions, or vernalized, before they were planted in the ground. This behavior leads to many normally biennial plants being treated as annual plant annuals in some areas. It is organised by the Sharjah Art Foundation. ref http www.sharjahart.org Sharjah Art Foundation ref Early days Since its inception in 1993, the event has formed a cultural bridge between artists, art institutions and organisations locally, regionally and internationally. Produced by the Department of Culture and Information in the Emirate of Sharjah emirate Sharjah , the Biennial now holds a key regional position in the production and presentation of art and in fostering experimentation. ref http www.sharjahbiennial.org Sharjah Biennial ref Role The Sharjah Biennial s track record clearly indicates its defining role as one of the few art institutions in the region it also spearheads a programme of support for artistic productions, access to their presentations and also actively assisting in their dissemination. This support, in light of the current developments in art and the incessant pursuit to define and re define the role of the now mushrooming biennials all over the world, needs to be sensibly extended to artists operating in the region. This support plays a vital role in the development and sustainability of a budding yet vibrant art movement . It also needs to reach out to those working in other parts of the world, who do not necessarily need the Biennial s support, but can positively contribute to the crucial dialogue among artists and practitioners, and the sharing of experiences in the progress of knowledge. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Biennial bearing or alternate bearing is a term used in pomology to refer to trees that have an irregular crop load from year to year. In the on year too much fruit is set, leading to small fruit size. Excess weight in the main branches can be too much for their mechanical resistance, causing them to break. Another major consequence is that flower induction will be lower, and the subsequent year will be off year too little fruit . The behavior could be due to plant hormones , particularly gibberellins produced in excess in the on years in the embryo s of the young fruit. It could also be caused by depletion of carbohydrate reserves in the tree. Reciprocating oscillation is an action of oscillation where the oscillation vector varies its amplitude, frequency and or displacement Multiplicative inverse reciprocally . Note not to be confused with the reciprocal of the given sinusoidal function . For example, an oscillation that changes its amplitude and thereby, for example, its displacement every cycle to half that of its initial amplitude is said to be reciprocating. Note that the term reciprocating can be used loosely to describe such an action but usually is not because such an action can be defined easily as two separate oscilations. Instead it is more commonly used to describe an oscillation in which the second definable oscillation can be defined as a non rotary cycle as its displacement. Reciprocating oscillation is an action where an oscillating body reciprocates within the oscillation, where reciprocation is distinct from just another oscillation by only jumping up and down and not oscillating about an axis. A climate oscillation or climate cycle is any recurring cyclical oscillation within global or regional climate , and is a type of climate pattern . These fluctuations in atmospheric temperature , sea surface temperature , precipitation or other parameters can be quasi periodic , often occurring on inter annual, multi annual, decadal, multidecadal, century wide, millennial or longer dynamical time scale timescale s. A prominent example is the El Ni o Southern Oscillation , involving sea surface temperatures along a strech of the equatorial Central and East Pacific Ocean and the western coast of tropical South America, but which affects climate worldwide. Records of past climate conditions are recovered through geology geological examination of proxy climate proxies , found in ice core glacier ice , sedimentology sea bed sediment , dendrochronology tree ring studies or otherwise. Electronic oscillation is the continuous recurrence of the same electricity electrical periodic waveform . ref http dictionary.reference.com browse oscillation accessed April 01, 2007 . ref The recurrence may be in the form of a varying voltage or a varying electric current current . The waveform may be sine wave sinusoidal or some other shape when its magnitude is plotted against the duration of its cycle. Electronic oscillation may be intentionally caused, as in devices designed as oscillation oscillators , or it may be the result of unintentional positive feedback from the output of an electronic device to its input. The latter appears often in feedback amplifiers such as operational amplifier s that do not have sufficient Bode plot Gain margin and phase margin gain or phase margins . In this case, the oscillation often interferes with or compromises the amplifier s intended function. Although the term is frequently written POGO, it is not an acronym , but in fact a reference to the bouncing of a pogo stick . ref name Vibrationdata ref http www.hq.nasa.gov office pao History SP 350 ch 3 5.html The Perils of Pogo ref Origin In general, pogo oscillation occurs when a surge in engine pressure increases back pressure against the fuel coming into the engine, reducing engine pressure, causing more fuel to come in and increasing engine pressure again. Flexing of fuel pipes can also induce fluctuations in fuel pressure. ref http www.princeton.edu stengel MAE342Lecture4.pdf Launch Vehicle Design ... to match a Resonance resonance frequency of the rocket then dangerous oscillation s can occur ... pogo oscillation will occur is when the engine is moving upward with fluctuating speed.
