In a plot similar to Steven Spielberg s Duel film Duel , this tells the story of an unseen psycho driver who is dubbed the Freeway Fiddler. Former stuntman Hal Needham directed Hack, who plays Janette Clausen, a TV reporter investigating a series of freeway murders. The psycho van driver is deliberately targeting and killing female motorists. While just a standard thriller , it is pepped up by the presence of several TV veterans, including George Hamilton actor George Hamilton , Frank Gorshin , Peter Graves actor Peter Graves , Dinah Shore , Harriet Nelson , Barbara Rush and Abe Vigoda . Director Needham even turns up in a supporting role. Death Car on the Freeway first aired on CBS television on September 25, 1979.
