primarysources date July 2010 refimprove date July 2010 Vista and Vista Pro are 3D Scenery generator landscape generation programs originally for the Amiga and Microsoft Windows PC range of home computers. It was written by John Hinkley and its own About box describes it as a 3 D landscape generator and projector capable of accurately displaying real world and fractal landscapes. TOC Graphics Generation Vista operates similarly to a Ray tracing graphics ray tracer in that light paths are generated. The user specifies light sources, and camera angles. The ground may be colored to create different ground styles. Vista has water, tree and cloud effects, making some images almost photorealistic. The ground itself may either be generated from a random or user inputted number, or it may use USGS DEM DEM landscape files for real world views, the software having come with a number of maps of Mars and Earth . Vista can load and save output images in PCX , BMP file format BMP , JPEG JPG and Truevision TGA Targa formats. PCX files can also be imported as elevations and ground colors to allow third party creation of landscapes in other Graphics software image editors . Trees can be placed on landscapes as either 2D or 3D objects. In 2D, the trees always face the camera and are fast to generate. 3D trees are created using fractals and can be given a variable bending of the branches to make them look more complicated. Compatibility The Amiga version of Vista works on all models of Amiga, however due to the low processor speeds generation of landscapes take a long time to complete. The PC version runs in MS DOS for the earlier versions and from 4.00 onwards it runs on all versions of 32 bit Microsoft Windows . Popular Culture Its most famous use was for the landscape used in the opening credits of The Chart Show . This sequence involved a silver spaceship flying through a series of valleys that had been generated using VistaPro Vista didn t support generating animations until the ... more details

It is the antecedent of the modern ice axe . French speaking climbers called this item a baton . Josias Simler , a Swiss professor of theology at what later became the University of Zurich , published the first treatise on the Alps, entitled De Alpibus commentarius . Thomas Graham Brown T. Graham Brown described Simler s observations on gear for travel over ice and snow in the mountains In 1574, Simler published a commentary on the Alps which is remarkable for its description of the technique of glacier travel and for its proof that Simler himself had practical experience. He describes the alpenstock, crampons , the use of the rope, the necessity of protecting the eyes on snow by veils or spectacles and he mentions that the leader on snow covered glaciers sounds for hidden crevasses with a pole. ref cite book last Brown first T. unreferenced date July 2008 File Policeman carrying plasticuffs.jpg thumb 300 pcx right Policeman carrying plasticuffs PlastiCuffs also called FlexiCuffs are a form of physical restraint for the hands, using plastic straps. They function as handcuffs , except that they are cheaper, easier to carry, and cannot be reused. The traditional form of PlastiCuffs are cable tie s, either two interlocking straps, or a single cable tie around both wrists. More recently, plastics manufacturing companies have started to produce special plasticuff devices, comprising two interconnected straps as one item. These are generally injection moulding injection moulded nylon items, selling for tens of cents each. The low cost and light weight of PlastiCuffs has made them popular with riot police , for use in Demonstration people demonstrations where they anticipate a large number of arrests, as well as with military forces. An advantage of disposable restraints is avoidance of disease transmission whereas metal handcuffs can spread disease through reuse from blood or other bodily fluids that may not have been cleaned off the cuffs , disposable restraints are not used on multiple subjects. Plasticuffs, if they are not applied correctly, are more uncomfortable than conventional handcuffs for the person being restrained. More care and training are required for the person applying them in order to avoid making them too tight. Some models cannot be double locked, making it possible for the cuffs to be further tightened after initial application, restricting blood flow to the hands and causing injury to the subject. Another risk of disposable restraints is that a subject of great physical strength and or under the influence of drugs may be able to break free from them with enough effort. They are also vulnerable to being cut with wire cutters or melted with a cigarette lighter. Various innovations on the PlastiCuff theme have been developed, including models which can be released using a regular ... more details
