  1. Pastorale

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 For Beethoven s Pastoral symphony, see Symphony No. 6 Beethoven Pastorale refers to something of a pastoral nature in music, whether in form or in mood. In baroque music , a pastorale is a movement of a melody in 3rds over a drone bass, recalling the traditional Christmas playing of pifferari players of traditional bagpipe s zampogna and reed pipes in Italy . Pastorales are generally in 6 8 or 12 8 metres. Common examples include the last movement of Arcangelo Corelli Corelli s Christmas Concerto op.6 no.8 , the third movement in Vivaldi s Spring concerto from The Four Seasons Vivaldi The Four Seasons , the Messiah Part I 13 Pifa movement in Handel s Messiah Handel Messiah , the first movements of Bach s Pastorella BWV 590 for organ and his Sinfonia opening part II of his Christmas Oratorio as an introduction to the angelic announcement to the shepherds. Scarlatti wrote some examples in his keyboard sonatas, and many other baroque composers, particularly French, used this technique. Pastorales are still played in the regions of Southern Italy where the zampogna continues to thrive. They generally sound like a slowed down version of a tarantella , as they encompass many of the same melodic phrases. The pastorale on the zampogna can be played by a solo zampogna player, or in some regions can be accompanied by the piffero also commonly called a ciaramella, pipita, or bifera , which is a primitive key less double reed oboe type instrument. Other uses A pastorale, also spelled pastoralli, and pastorali, is also a long handled metal tool used for holding a plate to preheat glass in a furnace for glassblowing . 1. La Symphonie Pastorale

For the 1946 film La Symphonie Pastorale film Unreferenced date November 2011 Original research date November 2011 La Symphonie Pastorale is a French novel written by Andr Gide published in 1919. The work was made into a film in 1946 by Jean Delannoy , with Mich le Morgan in the principal role as Gertrude. Plot It is about a pastor who adopts a young blind girl whom his daughter, Charlotte, names Gertrude . The title refers to Beethoven s Symphony No. 6 Beethoven Sixth Symphony also known as the Pastoral Symphony which the pastor takes Gertrude to hear. It also refers to the pastor s own symphony with Gertrude. His wife, Am lie, resents Gertrude because the pastor dedicates more attention to Gertrude than to their five children. She tries to prompt him to a recognition of the true nature of his feelings for the young woman in his care. Her ability to see this is contrasted with the blindness of the pastor in this regard and the reader is invited to judge him on his intellectual dishonesty. As a religious man, the pastor takes the Bible very seriously and tries to preserve Gertrude s innocence by protecting her from the concept of sin. Because the pastor is really the main character in Gertrude s limited world, she feels herself to be in love with him and to some extent he has similar feelings toward her. When his eldest son Jacques, who is about the same age as Gertrude, asks to marry her the pastor becomes jealous and refuses despite the fact that Jacques is obviously in love with her. Gertrude eventually gets an operation to repair her eyesight and, having regained the ability to see, realizes that things are not as beautiful as the pastor made them seem. She attempts suicide by jumping into a river, but is rescued and contracts pneumonia. She realizes that the pastor ... 1. Symphony No. 7 (Piston)

The Symphony No. 7 by Walter Piston is a symphony dating from 1960 in music 1960 . History Piston s Seventh Symphony was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra Association, and was premiered by that orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy , on February 10, 1961. The symphony was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1961, which was the second time for Piston his first was in 1948 for his Symphony No. 3 Piston Third Symphony Archibald 1978, 266 67 . It bears some resemblance to Piston s Three New England Sketches , composed in 1959, and for this reason as well as for parallels of structure has been compared to Ludwig van Beethoven Beethoven s Symphony No. 6 Beethoven Pastorale Symphony Pollack 1982, 133 . Analysis The work is in three movement music movements Con moto Adagio pastorale Allegro festevole A typical performance will last around 22 minutes. Citation needed date September 2010 When Piston was composing his Seventh Symphony he took into account the particular sonic character of the Philadelphia Orchestra s rich string timbres, as well as the acoustics of the Philadelphia Academy of Music where it was to be premiered Archibald 1978, 267 . The first movement begins with a large, soaring theme, featuring a propulsive rhythm in fast triple meter. The minor mode, forceful rhythms, and cumulative contrapuntal density in both the exposition and recapitulation lend this movement a vehemently passionate character. The second movement, Adagio pastorale, similarly is dominated by serious but not solemn broad melodies. The finale, as in Piston s other symphonies, is sunny and brilliant, including a passage of syncopated wind melodies accompanied by pianissimo percussion, and pizzicato strings, which recalls the scherzo of Piston s Sixth Symphony Archibald 1978, 266 .
