The Orto botanico di Pisa , also known as the Orto Botanico dell Universit di Pisa , is a botanical garden operated by the University of Pisa , and located at via Luca Ghini 5, Pisa , Italy . It is open weekday mornings without charge. The garden was established in 1544 under Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de Medici as the first university botanical garden in Europe, and entrusted to the famous botanist Luca Ghini of Imola . In 1563 the garden was relocated from its original riverside location now the Medicean Arsenal to one near the convent of Santa Marta, and in 1591 again moved to its third and current location. From these early times, the garden has contained a gallery of natural objects now Pisa s Museo di Storia Naturale , a library now part of the university library , and portraits of its directors throughout the centuries. It also includes one of the earliest iron framed hothouses built in Italy. Today the garden is divided into sections containing the botanical school, gardens, ponds, greenhouses, and various buildings. Major collections include herb gardens and arboreta , as well as the old botany institute, built 1591 1595, with a facade ornamented with sea shells. The garden was established in 1774 by Abbot Fulgenzio Vitman under the direction of Maria Theresa of Austria , transforming an existing Jesuit garden to serve students of medicine and pharmacology. The garden was restored in 1998 after a long period of neglect and decay. Today the garden consists primarily of rectangular flower beds, trimmed in brick, with elliptical ponds from the 18th century, and specula and greenhouse from the 19th century now used by the Academy of Fine Arts . It contains one of the oldest Ginkgo biloba trees in Europe, as well as mature specimens of Firmiana platanifolia , Juglans nigra , Pterocarya fraxinifolia , and Tilia . It is located at Via Micheli, 3, Florence , Italy , and open weekday mornings. An admission fee is charged. The garden was established on December 1, 1545, by Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany , and is Europe s third oldest, behind the Orto Botanico di Pisa and the Orto Botanico di Padova . It was first laid out by landscape gardener Niccol Pericoli to a botanical system and plantings chosen by Luca Ghini , and rose to prominence under Cosimo III de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III , with Pier Antonio Micheli as its director. As was typical of early European botanical gardens, its prime interest was in medicinal plants. However, as in 1753 the Societ Botanica was formed, the garden s focus turned to experimental agriculture and its layout was revised accordingly.     The Orto Botanico di Portici 20,000 m , also known as the Orto Botanico della Facolt di Agraria dell Universit di Napoli Portici , is a botanical garden operated by the University of Naples Agriculture Department, and located at Via Universit , 100 80055 Portici , Province of Naples , Campania , Italy . It is open weekday mornings, but reservations must be made in advance and an admission fee is charged. The garden s site was formerly a royal palace built 1738 1748 by Charles III of Spain , King of Naples and Sicily. After the Bourbons departure in 1860, today s gardens were founded in 1872 with the Royal Higher School of Agriculture. The park was enlarged by a further 36 hectares at that time, and two ornamental gardens about 9000 square meters created, which were then transformed into botanical gardens by Nicola Antonio Pedicino, the school s first botany professor. In 1935 the school became part of the University of Naples, and subsequently occupied by allied troops during World War II, destroying many plants, but from 1948 its collections have been restored and enlarged. The gardens currently contain over 4000 specimens representing about 1000 species . The most important collection are desert plants, which include over 600 species from Agavaceae , Aizoaceae , Cactaceae about 400 species , Didieraceae , and Euphorbiaceae . Of particular interest are the Gymnocalycium , Mamillaria , and Rhipsalis Alluaudia , Aloe , and Kalanchoe from South Africa and Madagascar and notable specimens of Welwitschia mirabilis from the South African desert. The garden also includes palms, fern s, conifer s, carnivorous plant s, and edible and medicinal plants, as well as a heated greenhouse for succulent s 1000 m .     The Orto Botanico dei Frignoli 7 hectares is a botanical garden located at 900 meters elevation on SS63 del Passo del Cerreto, Fivizzano , Province of Massa Carrara , Italy . It is open daily in the warmer months an admission fee is charged. The garden was originally established in 1932 as a nursery of the Corpo Forestale dello Stato State Forestry Corps . In 1990 it became a provincial botanical garden with help from Comunit Montana and the Museo di Storia Naturale della Lunigiana. Today the garden includes an arboretum containing about one hundred species of woody plants from the Apuan Alps , Apennine Mountains , and Mediterranean regions.     The Orto Botanico dell Universit di Pavia 20,000 m , also known as the Orto Botanico di Pavia , is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Pavia . It is located at Via S. Epifanio, 14, Pavia , Italy , and open weekdays. The garden was begun in 1773 as a successor to Pavia s earlier Orto dei Semplici established 1558 . By 1775 the garden was in use, with its first wooden greenhouses constructed in 1776. Nocca Domenico organized and expanded the garden 1797 1826, adding collections to exchange seeds and plants, and building a masonry greenhouse to replace the earlier wooden structures. The garden was extensively damaged in World War II , after which its greenhouses were relocated to the main building s south side. Today the garden contains about 2000 taxon taxa , with major collections of aquatic plant s, conifer s, hosta , hydrangea , magnolia , medical plants, peat bog plants, and a rose garden .
