File Jesus Christ the Apple Tree.JPG thumb right Jesus Christ the AppleTree lyrics in an 1897 republication of 1797 printing Jesus Christ the AppleTree also known as AppleTree is a poem written by an unknown New Englander in the 18th century. It has been set to music by a number of composers, including Jeremiah Ingalls 1764 1838 and Elizabeth Poston 1905 1987 . The first known publication of Jesus Christ the AppleTree was in 1784 in Divine Hymns, or Spiritual Songs for the use of Religious Assemblies and Private Christians compiled by Joshua Smith minister Joshua Smith , a lay Baptist minister from New Hampshire. The hymn may have been based on an earlier anonymous poem first printed in London s Spiritual Magazine in August 1761 crediting R.H. as the writer. ref Journal of American folklore, Volume 58 59 American Folk lore Society by Houghton, Mifflin, 1945 citing the earlier source as London Spiritual Magazine in August 1761 George Pullen Jackson White and Negro Spiritauls, N.Y., 1943, 63, note 6 ref The song may be an allusion to both the appletree in s Bible King James Song of Solomon Chapter 2 Song of Solomon 2 3 which has been interpreted as a metaphor representing Christ, and to Jesus description of his life as a Tree of life biblical tree of life in s Bible King James Luke Chapter 13 Luke 13 18 19 and elsewhere in the New Testament including s Bible King James Revelation Chapter 22 Revelation 22 1 2 and within the Old Testament in Genesis . Unreferenced date August 2008 In the Shade of the Old AppleTree is a popular song dating from 1905. It was written by Harry Williams songwriter Harry Williams and Egbert Van Alstyne music . The meter of its chorus is in the form of a Limerick poetry Limerick . Image InTheShadeOldAppleCoverDyer.jpeg thumb right 200px 1905 sheet music cover It can safely be characterized as a highly sentimental tune. Although the verses seldom heard nowadays provide further explanation, it is clear that the writer is singing about a lost love In the shade of the old appletree, Where the love in your eyes I could see, Where the voice that I heard, Like the song of a bird, Seemed to whisper sweet music to me, I could hear the dull buzz of the bee In the blossoms as you said to me, With a heart that is true, I ll be waiting for you, In the shade of the old appletree. Other uses In the movie The Wizard of Oz 1939 film The Wizard of Oz , in the scene involving the talking apple trees who become angry with Dorothy for picking apples off them, the strains of this song are heard in the instrumental underscore. Similarly, in Warner Bros. cartoons, for example, the tune was invoked in underscore sometimes, when trees were appearing on the screen. Parody A song like this, dripping with sentiment even by early 1900s standards, lent itself to parodies. Billy Murray singer Billy Murray recorded one. The verse describes him passing by the house of Maggie Jones, a maiden homelier than me , who asks him to fetch some apples on the promise of giving him one of the pies she plans to bake. That verse continues into the chorus So I climbed up the old appletree, For a pie was a real thing to me. She stood down below With her apron spread so To catch all the apples, you see. Petty s Orchard in Templestowe, Victoria, Australia , is one of Melbourne s oldest commercial orchards. It boasts the largest collection of heritage apple varieties on mainland Australia, including more than two hundred varieties of old and rare apples. ref http www.heritagefruitssociety.org.au Heritage Fruits Society ref In 1853 Thomas Petty arrived in Australia from England and selected land in the Doncaster and Templestowe area. It was Thomas Pettys grandson, Thomas Henry, who, in 1911, first bought the property that is located at Homestead Road, nestled along the Yarra River . Thomas Henry was the first of three generations of Pettys to work the Homestead Road orchard. The Petty Family managed the orchard until Parks Victoria purchased the property in 1981. The orchards that once covered the Doncaster and Templestowe area are fast disappearing. The Heritage Fruits Society manages and maintains the heritage fruit collection in Petty s Orchard. The society is part of a world wide network which is conserving antique apple varieties and protecting them from extinction . Petty s Orchard occupies 44 hectares of land.
