File Allium Drummondii.jpg thumb left Allium Drummondii Drummond s onion Allium drummondii , also known as Wild garlic and the Prairie onion , is a perennial plant native to North America . It is utilized by a number of Native American tribes ranging from the South Texas Texas Plains , over to New Mexico and then into California . The lovely white flowers come into bloom April through May coming in a variety of colors ranging from white to pink. Seemingly a rather nice flowering species, Allium drummondii is quite an invasive fellow. Uses This species of Allium is gathered by Natives for its small edible bulbs. Drummond s Onion contains a considerable amount of inulin , a non reducing sugar that humans cannot digest. Because of this, these onions must be heated for a long period of time in order to convert the inulin into digestible sugars. Tribes of the Texas and New Mexico area used the onion as an addition to meat dishes, whereas some tribes in California often used it as a main dish. 1. Homer Smith

About the American scientist the football coach Homer Smith American football Dr Homer William Smith January 2, 1895 March 25, 1962 was an United States American Physiology physiologist and an advocate for science. His research work focused on the kidney and he discovered inulin at the same time as Alfred Newton Richards A.N. Richards . Dr. Smith authored several books including From Fish to Philosopher , Man and His Gods , http www.positiveatheism.org hist homer1a.htm and The Kidney Structure and function in health and disease . Homer Smith s elegant experiments on the kidney in the 1930s proved beyond any doubt that it operated according to physical principles, both as a filter and a secretory organ, eliminating the last vestige of Vitalism in physiology. He also served on the board of trustees of Science Service, now known as Society for Science & the Public , from 1952 1955. It is a multi purpose food ingredient synthesized from dextrose glucose , plus about 10 percent sorbitol and 1 percent citric acid . Its E number is E1200 . The FDA approved it in 1981. History Commercial manufacture of edible polydextrose originated with a process developed by Hans H. Rennhard . Dr. Hans Rennhard of Pfizer, Inc. began investigating the potential of polysaccharides as low calorie replacements for sugar, fat, flour and starch. In 1965, he created polydextrose, a polymer of dextrose, produced from the naturally occurring components, glucose, sorbitol and citric acid. Commercial uses Polydextrose is commonly used as a replacement for sugar , starch , and fat in commercial beverages, cake s, candy candies , dessert mixes, breakfast cereals, gelatin s, frozen desserts, pudding s, and salad dressing s. Polydextrose is frequently used as an ingredient in low carb , sugar free and diabetic cooking recipes. It s also used as a humectant , Stabilizer chemistry stabiliser and thickening agent . Polydextrose is a form of soluble fiber and has shown healthful prebiotic nutrition prebiotic benefits when tested i ...   more details

  1. Synbiotics

refimprove date August 2009 Synbiotics refer to nutritional supplements combining probiotics and prebiotics in a form of synergism, hence synbiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria which are intended to colonize the large intestine and confer physiological health benefits to the host. A prebiotic is a food or dietary supplement product that confers a health benefit on the host associated with modulating the microbiota. Prebiotics are not drugs, not functioning because of absorption of the component, not due to the component acting directly on the host, and are due to changes to the resident bacteria either changing the proportions of the resident bacteria or the activities thereof. Measurable changes to the microbiota in the absence of a desirable physiological consequence in the host does not quality as a prebiotic. A prebiotic may be a fiber, but a fiber is not necessarily a prebiotic. Using prebiotics and probiotics in combination is often described as synbiotic, but the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization FAO recommends that the term synbiotic be used only if the net health benefit is synergistic. A further restriction is to require that the prebiotic be shown to increase the population and or function of the probiotic it is paired with.
