In philately stamp hinges or mounts are small, folded, transparent, rectangular pieces of paper coated with a mild gum. They are used by stamp collectors to affix postage stamp s onto the pages of a stamp album . ref name mack James A. Mackay Mackay, James . Stamp Collecting Philatelic Terms Illustrated . 4th edition. London Stanley Gibbons, 2003, p.68. ISBN 0852595573 ref Use The short end is moistened and affixed to the stamp, the long end is likewise affixed to the page. The hinge keeps the stamp on the page while still allowing it to be lifted to examine the back, for instance to see the watermark or philatelic expertisation expert marks . Risks The best stamp hinges are also designed to be peelable , meaning that the stamp may be removed from the page, and the hinge from the stamp, without any damage to either. Not all makes of hinge have this property, and the backs of many stamps have hinge remnants , where the hinge has torn away rather than letting go of the stamp. This is especially common for mint stamps, where the stamp s own gum adheres tightly to the hinge. Some old stamps may actually have multiple hinge remnants layered on top of each other. Conversely, careless removal of a hinge may take away a layer of the stamp s paper, resulting in a type of stamp thin known as a hinge thin . The thinner paper will be noticeable when the stamp is held up to the light and is considered a serious fault in a stamp. Even with the use of peelable hinges and care taken to minimize the moisture used, the hinge will leave a visible disturbance in the gum of an unused stamp. While this was formerly ... 1. Floating hinge

A floating hinge is a hinge that, while able to behave as a normal hinge, enables one of the objects to move away from the other hence float. In effect the hinge allows for two parallel axes of rotation, one for each object joined by the hinge, and each axis can be moved relative to the position of the other. Floating hinges are used in flatbed scanner s designed to scan thick objects such as books. A sheet of paper is placed on the glass, and the cover is lowered over it the glass, the paper, and the sheet are very close together. If a thick book is placed on the glass an ordinary hinge would leave the cover at an angle to the glass. A floating hinge raises the hinged edge of the cover to the level of the book, so that the cover remains parallel to the glass, but raised above it. Floating hinges are also used in two plate electric grill cooking cooking grills , as they allow for even heating of both sides of a thick piece of food without crushing it. 1. Living hinge

Image Mint box polypropylene lid.JPG thumb right 100px A living hinge on the lid of a Tic Tac box. A living hinge is a thin flexible hinge flexure bearing made from the same material as the two rigid pieces it connects, rather than cloth , leather , or some other flexible substance. It is typically thinned or cut to all allowing the rigid pieces to bend along the line of the hinge. The minimal friction and very little wear in such a hinge makes it useful in the design of microelectromechanical systems , and the low cost and ease of manufacturing makes them quite common in disposable packaging . These can flex more than a million cycles without failure. ref cite web url http www.efunda.com designstandards plastic design hinge.cfm title Engineering Fundamentals Living Hinge ref Plastic Plastic living hinges are typically manufactured in an injection molding operation that creates all three parts at one time as a single part, and if correctly designed and constructed, it can remain functional over the life of the part.
