primary sources date December 2011 update date November 2010 The HighLevel Shader Language or HighLevel Shading Language HLSL is a proprietary shading language developed by Microsoft for use with the Microsoft Direct3D API. It is analogous to the GLSL shading language used with the OpenGL standard. It is the same as the Nvidia Cg programming language Cg shading language, as it was developed alongside it. ref http www.fusionindustries.com default.asp?page cg hlsl faq Fusion Industries Cg and HLSL FAQ Bot generated title ref HLSL programs come in three forms, vertex shaders , geometry shaders, and pixel or fragment shaders. A vertex shader is executed for each vertex that is submitted by the application, and is primarily responsible for transforming the vertex from object space to view space, generating texture coordinates, and calculating lighting coefficients such as the vertex s tangent, binormal and normal vectors. When a group of vertices normally 3, to form a triangle come through the vertex shader, their output position is interpolated to form pixels within its area this process is known as rasterisation . for the languageHighLevel Assembly Highlevel assemblers in computing are Assembly language Assembler assemblers for assembly language that incorporate features found in highlevel programming language s. Some highlevel assemblers are Borland s Turbo Assembler TASM , Microsoft s Microsoft Macro Assembler MASM , IBM s HLASM for z Architecture systems , Alessandro Ghignola s Linoleum programming language Linoleum , and Niklaus Wirth s PL 360 . Highlevel assemblers typically provide instructions that directly assemble Bijective one to one into low level machine code as in any assembler, plus control statements such as IF, WHILE, REPEAT...UNTIL, and FOR, macros, and other enhancements. This allows the use of highlevel control statement abstractions wherever maximal speed or minimal space is not essential low level statements that assemble directly to machine code can be used to produce the fastest or shortest code. The end result is assembly source code that is far more readable than standard assembly code while preserving the efficiency inherent with using assembly language. Highlevel assemblers generally provide information hiding facilities and the ability to call functions and procedures using a highlevel like syntax i.e., the assembler automatically produces code to push parameters on the stack rather than the programmer having to manually write the code to do this . Highlevel assemblers also provide data abstractions normally found in highlevel languages. Examples include data structure structure s, union computer science union s, class computer science class es, and Set computer science set s. Unbalanced date April 2011 Highlevel verification HLV , or electronic system level verification, is the task to verify ESL designs at high abstraction level. i.e. it is the task to verify a model that represents hardware above register transfer level abstract level. For HLS Highlevel synthesis or c synthesis , HLV is to HLS as functional verification is to logic synthesis . Electronic digital hardware design has evolved from low level abstraction at digital electronics gate level to register transfer level RTL , the abstraction level above RTL is commonly called highlevel, ESL, or behavioral algorithmic level. In Highlevel synthesis , behavioral algorithmic designs in ANSI C C SystemC code is synthesized to RTL, which is then synthesized into gate level through logic synthesis . Functional verification is the task to make sure a design at RTL or gate level conforms to a specification. As logic synthesis matures, most functional verification is done at the higher abstraction, i.e. at RTL level, the correctness of logic synthesis tool in the translating process from RTL description to gate netlist is a less concern today. Highlevel synthesis is still an emerging technology, so Highlevel verification today has two important areas under development br 1 to validate HLS is correct in the translation process, i.e. to validate the design before and after HLS are equivalent, typically through formal methods br 2 to verify a design in ANSI C C SystemC code is conforming to a specification, typically through simulation . unreferenced date November 2009 Highlevel emulation HLE is an approach for construction of emulator s, especially for video game console s, which attempts to simulate the response of the system rather than accurately recreating its internal design. Instead of trying to accurately create or recreate the hardware gate by gate, in HLE a software platform is created on which the emulated code can be run in a host computer having different hardware and a different instruction set. The effort focuses on recreating the appropriate functionality provided by the system emulated. Thus, the emphasis is shifted from the most efficient method of processing data to getting the same or comparable results as if the native platform was used. By contrast, the traditional way of emulating is termed Low level emulation , or LLE which is used to develop new computer hardware and execute legacy binary code. The term HLE originates from UltraHLE , the first emulator for the Nintendo 64 console that ran commercial games. Initial discussion about HLE occurred to give context for the reasons behind some video game s not functioning properly with the emulator. The earliest 1962 highlevel emulator was called a Emulator Functional simulators functional simulator for executing military flight programs written in symbolic assembly language code, without generating binary code. Criteria for HighLevel Emulation In order for HLE approach to work, the platform in question must meet certain criteria. It is located in a residential neighbourhood near the intersection of Avenue Road Toronto Avenue Road and Dupont Street. The current building was erected in 1906, and expanded in 1910. It was designated a heritage site by the city in 1985. It was built on the site of the Yorkville Waterworks, which had been established in 1875 to provide the then separate town of Yorkville, Ontario with drinking water. It is one of 22 pumping stations in Toronto that move water from Lake Ontario to the higher elevation northern parts of the city. The HighLevel Pumping Station is one of the hubs of the system, with 10 pumps. While previously all these stations were manned, today it is only the HighLevel station which has permanent workers. Municipal employees from the site monitor the city s water supply twenty four hours per day. No footnotes date January 2011 File System architecture.jpg thumb Sample architecture diagram for the Android operating system A high level design provides an overview of a solution, platform, system, product, service, or process. Such an overview is important in a multi project development to make sure that each supporting component design will be compatible with its neighbouring designs and with the big picture. The highest level solution design should briefly describe all platforms, systems, products, services and processes that it depends upon and include any important changes that need to be made to them. A high level design document will usually include a high level architecture diagram depicting the components, interfaces and networks that need to be further specified or developed. The document may also depict or otherwise refer to work flows and or data flows between component systems. In addition, there should be brief consideration of all significant commercial, legal, environmental, security, safety and technical risks, issues and assumptions. The idea is to mention every work area briefly, clearly delegating the ownership of more detailed design activity whilst also encouraging effective collaboration between the various project teams. Today, most high level designs require contributions from a number of experts, representing many distinct professional disciplines. Finally, every type of end user should be identified in the high level design and each contributing design should give due consideration to customer experience.
