He was born at Leeds in 1790 and trained at Fenton, Murray and Wood , the well known makers of steam engines, textile machines and other machinery. In 1810 Hick moved to Bolton as manager of Rothwell s Union Foundry. It later became known as Rothwell, Hick and Rothwell . The firm made stationary steam engine s, a number of which were featured by John Farey, Jr. in the second volume of his Treatise on the Steam Engine , 1827 as well as general engineering products such as crane machine crane s. In 1830 they made the locomotive Union for the Bolton and Leigh Railway . Hick had married in 1814 and with his wife had two sons who he trained as engineers. In 1833 they set up their own manufactory, Benjamin Hick and Sons ... of them. Benjamim Hick died at Bolton 9 September 1842. It was a wooden, single seat, parasol wing aircraft. Only one was built. Design and development The Merlin, originally known as the Kestrel , was designed and built by W. E. Hick of the Newcastle upon Tyne Newcastle Glider Club. Hick was the eldest son of Benjamin Hick, a civil engineer, and his wife Elizabeth Routledge, daughter of William Routledge of Elvington Yorkshire.     William Edmund Hick 1 August 1912 &ndash 20 December 1974 was a United Kingdom British psychology psychologist , who was a pioneer in the new sciences of experimental psychology and ergonomics in the mid 20th century. Hick trained as a doctor, taking the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery MB and BS degrees of the University of Durham in 1938, and the Doctor of Medicine MD of the same University in 1949. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1941, leaving in 1944 when he moved to University of Cambridge Cambridge to join the Medical Research Council UK MRC s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit Applied Psychology Unit at the Cambridge Psychological Laboratory. He was appointed Reader academic rank Reader by the University of Cambridge in 1953, and was also a Fellow of St. John s College, Cambridge St. John s College . He was a founding member of the Experimental Psychology Group and served as its President in 1958, when it became the Experimental Psychology Society .   1. Rothwell, Hick and Rothwell

    refimprove date May 2011 Rothwell, Hick and Rothwell was an engineering company in Bolton , England . Set up in 1830, the partners became interested in the production of steam locomotives after the Rainhill Trials . The first engine was a 2 2 0 for the Bolton and Leigh Railway , followed by three more the following year for American railways. In that year, 1832, Benjamin Hick left to set up his own business, and the firm then became Rothwell and Company. A further order for America was fulfilled in 1833, then for a couple of years the firm was occupied with pumps and stationary engines. From 1936 steam locomotives became their main business. Up to 1840 they produced 56, 28 of which went abroad. Of note is a 4 2 0 for the South Carolina Railroad to the design of Horatio Allen . This had convert 4 ft 6 in m adj on drivers, with a swivelling front bogie, and reputed to have worked for 35 years. A deal of sub contract work came from Edward Bury and Company . From 1841, the company began a batch of engines for the broad gauge Great Western Railway . The largest order came in 1847 for 28 2 2 2 engines for the London and South Western Railway . Possibly the most remarkable were some 4 2 4 locomotive 4 2 4 T engines for the Bristol and Exeter Railway with convert 9 ft m adj mid diameter unflanged driving wheels, and two ball and socket swivelled bogies. They weighed 42 tons and achieved speeds of 82  mph, the fastest engines of the time. The quality of the company s products brought in repeat orders. Many of the engines were still in service twenty years later. From 1857 the engines were to Alexander Allan s design and were similar to the Old Crewe type. These were sold to the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway and the Eastern Counties Railway .
