The Helm Wind is a named wind in Cumbria , England , a strong north easterly wind which blows down the south west slope of the Cross Fell escarpment. It is the only named wind in the British Isles , although many other mountain regions in Britain exhibit the same phenomenon when the weather conditions are favourable. It may take its name from the helmet or cap of Pileus meteorology cloud which forms above Cross Fell, known as the Helm Bar , since a Lenticular cloud line of clouds over the fells can predict and accompany a Helm. Research into the helm wind was carried out by Gordon Manley in the 1930s. He interpreted the phenomenon in hydrodynamic terms as a standing wave and rotor , a model confirmed in 1939 by glider flights. While sailing, if left to its own devices a boat with lee helm will bear turn away from the wind, accelerate, and perform an accidental or uncontrolled jibe , perhaps repeatedly. In an uncontrolled jibe the force of the wind moves the Sail sails and boom from one side of the boat to the other. In a strong wind this movement will by very fast and forceful and can damage the boat, the sails, injure the crew, and even cause the boat to Broach sailing Broach lie over on its side . Revival For Our Day, a non profit organization, was founded to support Rev. and Mrs. Helm in their endeavor to find and do the Will of God, and to share the unsearchable riches and unspeakable joys of the Kingdom of Heaven with those to whome he was led.
