It is at the eastern tip of the Hel peninsula and guides ship traffic into Gda sk Bay and the Bay of Puck . History The lighthouse on Hel has its origins in the 16th century, when a fire was lit on the church tower at a height of 116 feet to guide ships. The structure burned down. In 1638 locals asked Gda sk authorities to build a lighthouse on the peninsula. After deliberation, a wooden structure was erected circa 1640, with a range of about 6 miles. In 1667 it burned down, too. Two further attempts at construction failed as well. However, seafaring in this area of the Baltic Sea Baltic remained hazardous, so around 1790 another effort was made. A site was allocated, including a lighthouse keeper s residence. The light was to be lit every day. The Hel van het Noorden Hell of the North is a Rowing sport rowing race over the distance of convert 6 km mi . The G.S.R. Aegir Groninger Studenten Roeivereniging Aegir Groningen Student Rowingclub Aegir has organised the head race annually since 1975. As the race takes place in the last weekend of November the weather is often cold and stormy, hence the name Hell of the North . History Until 1988 the race took place on the Van Starkenborghkanaal . After the old boathouse De Punt burned down, G.S.R. Aegir moved to a new location at the Winschoterdiep . This made a move to the Eemskanaal necessary.
