Car hawking , or drive by falconry is a modern falconry technique which relies upon the use of a motor car or other motor vehicle as a base from which to hunt wild quarry species with a trained raptor . Typically, the falconer will drive around in his or her car, seeking suitable small game in the immediate vicinity of the road. Once an appropriate target has been selected, the raptor is then slipped from the window of the moving vehicle as it passes by in order that it might engage with its prey. Car hawking provides an advantage over more traditional methods of falconry in that the hawk is already moving at a considerable speed, with added momentum upon exiting the vehicle and as the car acts as cover, it has an enormous element of surprise over the quarry, giving it little or no time to react and potentially escape. Numerous videos exist on the internet of people successfully utilizing this method, flying Harris Hawk s and Goshawk s against feral pigeon s and corvid s in both urban and rural areas. Legality of this practice varies by location and protected status of the quarry and some falconers consider car hawking to be extremely unsporting. ref name mullenix cite web last Mullenix first Matt title Principles & Opinions url http www.reocities.com matthewmullenix falconry principles.html publisher A Falconry Site accessdate 10 November 2011 ref References Reflist External links youtube 1u0jPkZWbnY title A video demonstrating car hawking utilizing a Harris Hawk Category Falconry Falconiformes stub ... more details

The Gibbons Hawking effect is the statement that a temperature can be associated to each solution of the Einstein field equations that contains a causal horizon. It is named after Gary Gibbons and Stephen William Hawking . The term causal horizon does not necessarily refer to event horizon s only, but could also stand for the horizon of the visible universe, for instance. For example, Schwarzschild metric Schwarzschild spacetime contains an event horizon and so can be associated a temperature. In the case of Schwarzschild spacetime this is the temperature math T math of a black hole of mass math M math , satisfying math T propto M 1 math see also Hawking radiation . A second example is de Sitter space which contains a particle horizon . In this case the temperature math T math is proportional to the Hubble constant Hubble parameter math H math , i.e. math T propto H math . References Gibbons, Hawking. The Hartle Hawking state is a proposal concerning the state of the universe prior to the Planck epoch . Hartle Hawking is essentially a no boundary proposal that the universe is infinitely finite that there was no time before the Big Bang because time did not exist before the formation of spacetime associated with the Big Bang and subsequent expansion of the universe in space and time. James Hartle and Stephen Hawking suggest that if we could travel backward in time toward the beginning of the universe, we would note that quite near what might have otherwise been the beginning, time gives way to space such that at first there is only space and no time. Beginnings are entities that have to do with time because time did not exist before the Big Bang, the concept of a beginning of the universe is meaningless. According to the Hartle Hawking proposal, the universe has no origin as we would understand it the universe was a Gravitational singularity singularity in both space and time, pre Big Bang . Thus, the Hartle Hawking state universe has no beginning, but it is not the Steady State theory steady state universe of Fred Hoyle Hoyle it simply has no initial boundaries in time nor space. Technical Explanation In theoretical physics , the Hartle Hawking state , named after James Hartle and Stephen Hawking , is the wave function of the Universe a notion meant to figure out how the Universe started that is calculated from Feynman s Path integral formulation path integral . More precisely, it is a hypothetical Vector geometric vector in the Hilbert space of a theory of quantum gravity that describes this wave functional mathematics functional . It is a functional of the metric tensor defined at a D 1 dimensional compact surface , the Universe, where D is the spacetime dimension. The Penrose Hawking singularity theorems are a set of results in general relativity which attempt to answer the question of when gravitation produces gravitational singularity singularities . A singularity in solutions of the Einstein field equations is one of two things a situation where matter is forced to be compressed to a point a space like singularity a situation where certain light rays come from a region with infinite curvature time like singularity Space like singularities are a feature of Schwarzschild metric non rotating uncharged black hole s, while time like singularities are those that occur in charged or rotating black hole exact solutions. It is an update and rewrite of Hawking s 1988 A Brief History of Time . In this book Hawking and Mlodinow present quantum mechanics , string theory , Big Bang the big bang theory , and other topics in a more accessible fashion to the general public. The book is updated with newly discovered topics, and informs of recurring subjects throughout the book in greater detail. In general relativity , the Gibbons Hawking York boundary term is a term that needs to be added to the Einstein Hilbert action when the underlying spacetime manifold has a boundary. The Einstein Hilbert action is the basis for the most elementary variational principle from which the Einstein field equations field equations of general relativity can be defined. However, the use of the Einstein Hilbert action is appropriate only when the underlying spacetime manifold math mathcal M math is Closed manifold closed , i.e., a manifold which is both compact manifold compact and without boundary. In the event that the manifold has a boundary math partial mathcal M math , the action should be supplemented by a boundary term so that the variational principle is well defined. The necessity of such a boundary term was first realised by James W. York York and later refined in a minor way by Gary Gibbons Gibbons and Stephen HawkingHawking . For a manifold that isn t closed, the appropriate action is math mathcal S EH mathcal S GHY frac 1 16 pi int mathcal M mathrm d 4 x sqrt g R frac 1 8 pi int partial mathcal M mathrm d 3 x sqrt h K math , where math mathcal S EH math is the Einstein Hilbert action, math mathcal S GHY math is the Gibbons Hawking York boundary term, math h alpha beta math is the induced metric on the boundary and math K math is the trace of the second fundamental form . Varying the action with respect to the metric math g alpha beta math gives the Einstein field equations Einstein equations the addition of the boundary term means that in performing the variation, the geometry of the boundary encoded in the induced metric math h alpha beta math is fixed. There remains ambiguity in the action up to an arbitrary functional of the induced metric math h alpha beta math .
