Image Guido Reni 058.jpg thumb center HarmoniaHarmonia was a young Sicily Sicilian woman who was the daughter of Gelo , the brother of King Hiero I of Syracuse . She was the wife of Themistius . Ancient history records that one day the people of Syracuse rebelled against the royal family. The young king Hiero was murdered along with Themistius and Andronodorus, sons in law of Gelo and Hiero. The angry crowd then murdered the wives of Themistius and Andronodorus. Then with drawn swords they attacked the daughters of Hiero, Damarata and Heraclia, killing them both. They then went looking for Harmonia to finish their deeds. With the clever thinking on the part of Harmonia s nurse and protector, she found a girl that was of the same age and looks of Harmonia that was willing to go along with a ruse to protect the life of Harmonia. The nurse dressed her up in royal attire and made ready for the assassins. The girl did not object to the stratagem and was more than willing to sacrifice her life for the royal family princess. When the assassins saw her they quickly finished her off with their daggers and swords. Harmonia watching the murder take place from her safe hiding place had mixed emotions of the event. She was elated of the courage of this girl, however saddened with the loss of the innocent girl. Harmonia burst into tears and committed suicide. The Necklace of Harmonia was a fabled object in Greek mythology that, according to legend, brought great misfortune to all of its wearers or owners, who were primarily queens and princesses of the ill fated Ancient Thebes Boeotia House of Thebes . It could loosely be compared to the Hope Diamond of real life. Background Hephaestus , blacksmith of the Olympian gods , discovered his wife, Aphrodite , goddess of love , having a sexual affair with Ares , the god of war . He became enraged and vowed to avenge himself for Aphrodite s infidelity by cursing any lineage of children resulting from the affair. Aphrodite bore a daughter, Harmonia mythology Harmonia , from Ares seed. Harmonia grew up and was later betrothed to Cadmus of Thebes. Upon hearing of the royal engagement, Hephaestus presented Harmonia with an exquisite necklace and robe as a wedding gift. In some versions of the myth, only the necklace is given. In either case, the necklace was wrought by Hephaestus own hand and was cursed to bring disaster to any who wore it. Magical properties The magical necklace, referred to simply as the Necklace of Harmonia, allowed any woman wearing it to remain eternally young and beautiful. It thus ... , and inlaid with various jewels. Owners Harmonia and Cadmus were both later transformed into serpents dragons in some versions of the myth . The extent of their suffering as a result of Harmonia wearing the Necklace is debatable because Cadmus and Harmonia are usually described as ascending to the paradise of the Elysium Elysian Fields after their transformation.
