It is formed by the weathering and decomposition of pyrite commonly near or in volcanic vents. Its chemical formula is iron Fe aluminum Al sub 2 sub sulfur S oxygen O sub 4 sub sub 4 sub · 22 water H sub 2 sub O . It forms fibrous monoclinic crystals. The crystals are water soluble. Occurrences include the Atacama Desert , Chile , Dresden, Saxony, Germany , San Juan County, Utah , and Mont Saint Hilaire , Canada . The name is from Latin halotrichum for salt hair. It is the iron analogue of the copper sulfate chalcanthite . It alters to siderotil by Dehydration loss of water . It is a secondary sulfate mineral which forms from the oxidation of primary sulfide mineral s such as pyrite and marcasite in the near surface environment. It often occurs as a post mine encrustation on old underground mine surfaces. It also occurs in coal and lignite seams exposed to humid air. ref name Mindat It also occurs as a rare sublimate phase around volcanic fumaroles. ref name HBM Associated minerals include pisanite , chalcanthite , epsomite , pickeringite , halotrichite and other sulfate minerals. ref name HBM It was first described in 1850. ref name HBM References Reflist Category Sulfate minerals Category Iron minerals Category Monoclinic minerals sulfate min ... more details

However, it is much rarer. It forms velvety aggregates of extremely fine fibres and radial aggregates. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and forms translucent bright blue acicular crystal clusters or drusey coatings. The Mohs hardness is 2 and the specific gravity ranges from 2.74 to 2.95. Refractive index Refractive indices are n 1.588 n 1.617 n 1.655. It is an oxidation product of primary copper mineralization in a weathering environment with abundant aluminium and sulfate. Associated minerals include brochantite , spangolite , chalcophyllite , olivenite , tyrolite , parnauite , azurite and malachite . The main deposits are Cap la Garrone in the Var d partement Var France , Romania and Arizona USA . Because of its beautiful colouring, it is very popular with collectors. It was first described in 1839 from Moldova Nou , Banat, Romania. The name is from Greek language Greek kyaneos for blue and triches for hair referring to the typical color and habit. Technical date July 2011 Image Ortoclasio.jpg thumb right 200px An example of the monoclinic crystals, orthoclase In crystallography , the monoclinic crystal system is one of the 7 lattice point group s. A crystal system is described by three Vector geometric vectors . In the monoclinic system, the crystal is described by vectors of unequal length, as in the orthorhombic system. They form a rectangular prism geometry prism with a parallelogram as its base. Hence two pairs of vectors are perpendicular, while the third pair makes an angle other than 90 . Bravais lattices and point space groups Two monoclinic Bravais lattice s exist the primitive monoclinic and the centered monoclinic lattices, with layers with a rectangular and rhombic lattice, respectively. class wikitable Monoclinic Bravais lattice Primitive P Base centered C image Monoclinic.svg 100px image Monoclinic base centered.svg 100px Crystal Classes The monoclinic crystal system class names, examples, Sch nflies notation , Hermann Mauguin notation , crystallographic point group point groups , International Tables for Crystallography space group number, ref name ITC cite book title International Tables for Crystallography doi 10.1107 97809553602060000001 isbn 978 1 4020 4969 9 editor first E. editor last Prince year 2006 publisher International Union of Crystallography ref orbifold , type, and space groups are listed in the table below. class wikitable align center rowspan 2 colspan 5 Point group rowspan 2 Example rowspan 2 Type colspan 8 rowspan 2 Space groups Name Schoenflies notation Sch nflies Hermann Mauguin notation Intl orbifold Coxeter notation Coxeter 3 5 monoclinic ref name x name cite web title The 32 crystal classes url http www.cartage.org.lb en themes sciences physics SolidStatePhysics AtomicBonding CrystalStructure 32Crystal 32Crystal.htm accessdate 2009 07 08 ref C sub 2 sub math 2 math 22 2 sup sup halotrichite enantiomorphic Chemical polarity polar math mathrm P 2 , math math mathrm P 2 1 , ... more details
