Multiple issues orphan May 2008 confusing May 2008 context February 2009 There are multiple classes of airspace . Depending on the level of aviation activity in a class of airspace, different levels of air traffic control are used. An GCO is a variant of RCO. Historically, Aviator pilots would use a RCO, which was a direct telephone line to the nearest air traffic controller, be it a tower or a Flight Service Station . An GCO is an advanced variant that allows a pilot to use the plane s radio to contact the RCO, and contact the nearest air traffic control service. In areas with decent cellular service, the procedure has been replaced by just calling the relevant air traffic controller directly. A ground communication outlet is an automatic, remotely controlled, ground to ground communications device. Pilots at non tower airport s may contact the local Air Traffic Control ATC facility and or Flight Service Station FSS by aircraft radio to telephone connection located on the airport. The telephone call goes to the appropriate FSS or sector ATC controller. Pilots may receive an instrument clearance, close a VFR or IFR flight plan, get an updated weather briefing prior to take off, or any other FSS or ATC services. Use the listed frequency for the airport 121.725 or 135.075 . Activate the system with four key clicks on the VHF radio to contact the appropriate ATC facility or six key strokes to contact the FSS. There is timer on the modem connection. If no voice is heard for a preset time period, the system will disconnect. Note that the VHF transceiver on the airport is very low power, 2 5 watt watts . You may not be able to establish contact when between hangar rows or near other obstructions. Additionally, you may need to reposition your aircraft slightly when stopped on the taxiway. The GCO system is intended to be used only on the ground. Airports with GCO are noted in the text portion of the airport diagram. ref PDF http www.txdot.gov publications aviation director ... more details

Summary Information Description A large crane dismantles the fixed service structure FSS piece by piece on Launch Pad 39B at NASA s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Work to remove the rotating service structure RSS also continues at the pad. The FSS and RSS were designed to support the unique needs of the Space Shuttle Program. In 2009, the pad was no longer needed for the shuttle program, so it is being restructured for future use. Its new design will feature a clean pad for rockets to come with their own launcher, making it more versatile for a number of vehicles. The transformation also includes the refurbishment of the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen tanks and the upgrade of about 1.3 million feet of cable. The new lightning protection system, which was in place for the October 2009 launch of Ares I X, will remain. For information on NASA s future plans, visit www.nasa.gov. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Remote Communications Outlets RCO are remote aviation band radio transceivers, established to extend the communication capabilities of Flight Information Center s FIC and Flight Service Station s FSS . Pilots can find RCO frequencies in charts or publications such as the Airport Facility Directory or Canada Flight Supplement . The RCO is used to make a radio call to the outlet as if the pilot were making the call directly to the FSS or FIC. The outlet will relay the call and the briefer s response automatically. RCOs are sometimes confused with RTRs, or remote transmitter receivers. In fact, the difference between the two is subtle. While RCOs serve flight service stations, RTRs serve terminal air traffic control facilities. RCOs and RTRs may be UHF or VHF and are divided into a variety of classes determined by the number of transmitters or receivers. Classes A through G are used mainly for air ground communications. Class O facilities were created specifically to provide ground to ground communication between air traffic controllers and pilots located at satellite airports. The idea was to create a way for pilots to receive en route clearances or departure authorizations and cancel IFR flight plans. Class O RTRs also were intended to allow pilots flying below the coverage of the primary air ground frequency to continue to receive advisories from air traffic control. Class O facilities are nonprotected outlets and are subject to prolonged outages which may go undetected and unreported. Canada also uses a special variant called the Dial up Remote Communications Outlet DRCO . DRCOs connect to an FIC or FSS over a phone line, and pilots initiate the connection by keying their microphones in a prescribed pattern.
