In philosophy of mind , mentalism is the view that the mind and mental states exist as causally efficacious inner states of persons. The view should be distinguished from substance dualism , which is the view that the mind and the body or brain are two distinct kinds of things which nevertheless interact somehow with one another. Although this dualistic view of the mind body connection entails mentalism, mentalism does not entail dualism. Jerry Fodor and Noam Chomsky have been two of mentalism s most ardent recent defenders. 1. Disjunction elimination

Unreferenced date December 2009 Rules of inference In propositional logic disjunction elimination , or proof by cases , is the inference that, if A or B is true, and A entails C, and B entails C, then we may justifiably infer C. The reasoning is simple since at least one of the statements A and B is true, and since either of them would be sufficient to entail C, C is certainly true. For example It is true that either I m inside or I m outside. It is also true that if I m inside, I have my wallet on me. It s also true that if I m outside, I have my wallet on me. Any attempt to bar the entail without the consent of the Protector would only be partially successful.
