The Mysteries of London is a penny dreadful or city mysteries novel begun by George W. M. Reynolds in 1844 . Reynolds wrote the first two series of this long running narrative of life in the seedy underbelly of mid nineteenth century London . Thomas Miller poet Thomas Miller wrote the third series and Edward L. Blanchard wrote the fourth series of this immensely popular title. Michael Angelo in Penny Dreadfuls and Other Victorian Horrors writes blockquote Reynolds had read Eugene Sue while in Paris and was particularly impressed by his novel Les Myst res de Paris The Mysteries of Paris . It inspired Reynolds to write and publish a penny part serial The Mysteries of London 1845 , in which he paralleled Sue s tale of vice, depravity, and squalor in the Parisian slums with a sociological story contrasting the vice and degradation of London working class life with the luxury and debaucheries of the hedonistic upper crust. An early socialist and a Chartism Chartist sympathizer, Reynolds had a genuine social conscience, and he contrived to stitch into the pages of his books diatribes against social evil s and class inequities. 79 blockquote Instalments were published weekly and contained a single illustration and eight pages of text printed in double columns. The weekly numbers were later bound in cloth covers with a fresh title page and table of contents and offered as complete works of fiction. After Reynolds quit The Mysteries of London , he began a new title The Mysteries of the Court of London , which ran from 1848 until 1856 . The Abbey of Frassinoro was one of the many Order of Saint Benedict Benedictine Monastery monasteries throughout Europe associated with the noblewoman Matilda of Tuscany , who reigned over the Badia lands near Frassinoro. This abbey was located in Frassinoro , in the Apennines in the province of Modena , on the boarder with Reggio Emilia. History It is believed that the first church dates back to the Italian Byzantine period in the 7th 10th centuries. At the end of the 8th century, there was a small church under the administration of the Pieve parish of Rubbiano the former had been in existence since the time of Siegfried I, Longobard founder of the Canossa dynasty, or about 930 AD. The chapel was located along the ancient via Bibulca which went through the San Pellegrino Pass in order to arrive in Lucca, a destination for pilgrims who came to worship the Holy Face . Between 1007 and 1052, a hostel for travelers was annexed by the church, and was then placed under the Polirone Abbey Abbey of Polirone , near Mantua . ref http www.luna nuova.it ValDragone LuoghiePaesi Frassinoro Frassinoro 28testo 29.htm Fressinoro ref In 1072, Beatrice of Lotharinga or Beatrice of Bar and her daughter Matilda of Canossa Tuscany , gave the relics of Saint Claudius to this Benedictine convent. ref http www.provincia.modena.it page.asp?IDCategoria 6&IDSezione 2430&ID 52198 provincia.modena.it ref The highest period of splendor for this abbey was when Beatrice of Lotharingia founded a Benedictine abbey thereafter, its history got confused with that of the abbey in the nearby town of Montefiorino. He did not become prominent until the liberal press exposed some of his questionable business transactions. In retaliation he published a pamphlet on Simon of Trent , in an effort to confirm the truth of the blood accusation Ein Ritualmord Actenm ssig Nachgewiesen, Vienna 1893 . Actuated by the same motive, he induced the convert Paulus Meyer to write an account of a ritual murder which he pretended to have seen in 1875 in Ostrow , Russia . The story was published in the Vienna Vaterland, and the parties named as perpetrators in the crime brought a libel suit against Meyer and Deckert, the latter being sentenced Sept. 15, 1893 to a fine of 400 florins 160 . Deckert continued to preach anti Jewish sermons, which he published in his magazine, Der Sendbote des Heiligen Joseph. To one of these sermons he appended a prayer for the distress caused by the Jews 1894 , a travesty of the Lord s prayer in the most infamous language. The government confiscated it. The Medieval popular Bible is a term used especially in literary studies, but also in art history and other disciplines, to encompass the wide variety of presentations of Biblical material in medieval culture outwith the exegetical tradition. The exegetical tradition means the vast corpus of Latin writings, often Bible commentaries, sermons or preaching handbooks, diatribes against doctrinal deviancy and philosophical explorations, in which scholars of the medieval Church present the Bible according to medieval orthodoxy. Its intended readership is, in the first instance, other theologians. In contrast to this, the medieval popular Bible is aimed at the ordinary population of medieval Europe, and to some extent is also created by them. It ranges from very pious vernacular writings such as the Biblical Epic to scurrillous fabliaux in which Biblical figures make an appearance. It includes most religious drama, much stained glass and some wild and fanciful retellings of Bible stories. The fruit of paradise is a standard example. The Bible does not say what kind of fruit it was, but in the popular retelling, as opposed to the theological schools, it became an apple. Since the apple served well to communicate spiritual ideas, the exegetical tradition did not resist it. In the medieval understanding of Biblical truth, there was no need for a modern style of debate on the accuracy of the motif. Serious work on this area of medieval culture probably began with Beryl Smalley in the 1940s. The term medieval popular Bible became established in scholarship relatively recently as a result of the writings of Brian O. Murdoch , though the phrase had been used before him, usually in a less clearly defined way. ref h. l. spencer, Review of BRIAN MURDOCH. He was professor of humanities at the Colegio Triling e Trilingual College , and in the Greater College of San Ildefonso, in Alcal de Henares . He was also canon of the Complutensian church of SS. He signed them with the pseudonyms Trepus Ruitanus Lamira and Juan Pablo Ricci . He owns his fame to the diatribes from an Aristotelian perspective against, principally, Lope de Vega , but also against Luis Tribaldos de Tolello , Padre Juan Luis de la Cerda and Jos Antonio Gonz lez de Salas . He is especially remembered for the Latin satire Spongia Paris, 1617 , written probably in collaboration with Juan Pablo M rtir Rizo . The original work has been lost, due to its destruction by the enemies of Torres, but it was reconstructed by Joaqu n de Entrambasaguas in his Una guerra literaria del Siglo de Oro Lope de Vega y los preceptistas aristot licos , Madrid, 1932. It contained personal attacks on Lope, as well as attacks on his dramatic theory and practice as defying Aristotelian norms. She had the unusual distinction for a woman of the time of having her poetry published. The full works, published in two volumes in 1608, were entitled Parthenica meaning Maidenly Writings . The subject matter varied between idyllic reveries, odes to Rudolf II Emperor Rudolf II originally sent to him with the intention of convincing him to lend money , odes to herself, and anti Semitic diatribes. She was born to Jane Cooper in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire , England. Nothing is known about her father, but her stepfather, Edward Kelley , was a well known alchemist. Kelley, along with John Dee mathematician John Dee , was employed in the court of Rudolf II, which resulted in the family moving to Prague . Her command of languages was remarkable, being fluent in at least five Czech, English, German, Italian, and Latin. In 1603 she married a lawyer, Johnnes Leo. Together, they had seven children, before she died in childbirth in 1612. She is buried in St. Thomas Church in the Mala Strana section of Prague.
