  1. Knuckle curve

In Major League Baseball Major League history, the term knuckle curve refers to three entirely different pitches. The first, more common pitch called the knuckle curve is really a standard curveball , thrown with one or more of the index or mean fingers bent. According to practitioners, this gives them a better grip on the ball and allows for tighter spin and greater movement. In all other respects, this knuckle curve is identical to the standard curveball. This version of the knuckle curve is currently used by Major League pitchers Cliff Lee , J. P. Howell , Brandon Morrow , Phil Hughes , A.J. Burnett , Jonathan Sanchez and Gil Meche . Mike Mussina was well known for his incorporation of the pitch into his repertoire. Justin Verlander formerly threw a knuckle curve but was forced to abandon the pitch due to problems with blisters http www.freep.com apps pbcs.dll article?AID 20060501 SPORTS02 605010394 1050 . The knuckle curve is usually called the spike curve by MLB players and coaches because the pitch is nothing like a knuckleball. The second type of knuckle curve is a breaking ball that is thrown with a grip similar to the knuckleball. Unlike a knuckleball, which spins very little, a knuckle curve spins like a normal curveball because the pitcher s index and middle fingers push the top of the ball into a downward curve at the moment of release. Since only two fingers produce the spin, however, a knuckle curve does not spin as fast as a curveball, meaning the break is less sharp and predictable. Because the knuckle curve can be thrown with the same general motion as a fastball , it is more deceptive than a normal curveball. This kind of knuckle curve is rare it is easier to control than a standard knuckleball, but still difficult to master. The most famous practitioners of this type of knuckle curve are Burt Hooton Burt Happy Hooton , who pitched for the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers from the mid 1970s to mid 1980s, and former St. Louis Cardinals St. L ...   more details

  1. Breaking ball

unreferenced date July 2007 Image Sliderillustration.png thumb A common grip of a slider In baseball , a breaking ball is a pitch baseball pitch that does not travel straight like a fastball as it approaches the Batter baseball batter . A pitcher who uses primarily breaking ball pitches is often referred to as a junkballer . A breaking ball will have some sideways or downward motion on it. Curveball s and slider s are two types of breaking balls. A breaking ball is more difficult than a fastball for a catcher to receive as breaking pitches sometimes hit the ground before making it to the plate sometimes intentionally, sometimes not . The pitcher must therefore have confidence in the catcher, and the catcher have confidence in himself, to block a ball in the dirt when there are runners on base, since if the ball gets away from the catcher the runners will likely advance. If a breaking ball fails to break, it is called a hanging breaking ball. The hanger becomes a high, slow pitch that is very easy to hit, and often results in hits for extra bases or a home run . Whether a right handed or a left handed pitcher is throwing will dictate which direction a catcher will turn his body to adjust for the spin of a breaking ball. Therefore, blocking the breaking ball requires some thought and preparation. It is worth noting that a breaking ball is not a specific pitch, but rather any pitch that breaks for instance, a curveball, cutter, slider . 1. Pitch f/x

PITCH f x , created and maintained by Sportvision , is a system used to locate and determine the speed of a pitched baseball. This system, which made a debut in 2006, is installed in every MLB stadium. ref http www.slate.com id 2172223 PITCHf x, the new technology that will change statistical analysis forever , Slate magazine Slate , 15 August 2007. Accessed 2008 05 29. ref Usage PITCH f x is a system used to determine the speed of a thrown baseball exactly at the time it is released, as well as locate its movements to an accuracy of one inch. With Pitch f x, statistics such as the person highest velocity, or the person with the sharpest curve etc., can be analyzed. There are two elements of pitch f x. The first provides the total break of the pitch by comparing the height of the ball as it passes over home plate with the projected location of the ball through perfectly straight. The second element provides the influence of spin by calculating the difference between the point the ball passes through the strike zone and the projected point the ball would pass if it had no spin. For example, a fastball would have a small value for break but a large value for spin displacement because of the rising action of the fastball caused by backspin . Conversely, a curveball or slider will have a significant break measurement, but lower spin displacement. References reflist 2 Category Baseball media sport stub ...   more details

  1. Slider

Dablink This article is about the baseball pitch. For other possible meanings see Slider disambiguation . Image Sliderillustration.png thumb 150px A common grip used to throw a slider In baseball , a slider also known as a yakker , a snapper , or a spinner is a pitch baseball pitch that breaks laterally and down, with a speed between that of a curveball and that of a fastball . The break on the pitch is shorter than that of a curveball. The release technique of a slider is between a curveball and a fastball. The slider is similar to the cutter baseball cutter , a pitch which is thrown as a fastball, but differs in the sense that a slider tends to be more of a breaking ball . Slider continuum Depending on velocity, a pitch can fall anywhere on the continuum from fastball to slider fastball cut fastball hard slider slider slurve cut fastball 2 3 MPH slower than fastball hard slider 3 5 MPH slower than fastball slider 5 9 MPH slower than fastball The most notable difference between a slider and curveball is that the curveball delivery includes a downward yank on the ball as it is released, in addition to the lateral spin applied by the slider grip. If the pitcher is snapping his wrist as he throws, and the movement is more downward than sideways, then he is probably throwing a curveball or slurve , and not a true slider . ref http www.sportsmogul.com pitches index.html ref When throwing a slider the pitcher should create a dot on the baseball. What this means is that as the ball approaches home plate the rotation of the ball is forming a dot. On a good slider the dot will be down where it is not noticeable for a hitter to pick up. From the batter s perspective this dot appears white, whereas the dot is red for a curve ball created by the seam movement allowing many skilled batters to immediately recognize the type of pitch. By having the dot on the bottom part of the ball the pitcher will create good depth to the pitch. A good hard slider has a slight break across the ...   more details
