Gary French Dockery 1954 April 15, 1997 , was a police officer in Walden, Tennessee who made world headlines after emerging from a 7 year Persistent vegetative state coma like state and started talking enthusiastically, recognizing friends and recalling events from past years. On September 17, 1988 he was shot in the forehead by a drunken assailant as he responded to a domestic disturbance call. He slipped into what doctors called a persistent vegetative state, unable to communicate except occasionally with eye blinks and groans indicating that part of his brain was still working. But on February 11, 1996 he inexplicably stirred and started talking again nonstop, recognizing old friends, recalling the names of his horses, and recalling camping trips. By the second day he had largely become silent again, as he recovered from lung surgery and a serious bout of pneumonia. He never recovered to the same degree again. A year later, on April 15, 1997, he died at the age of 43 from a blood clot in his lung. Dockery was transported from his nursing home to Erlanger hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9 52 a.m. See also Locked in syndrome References http query.nytimes.com gst fullpage.html?res 9B0CE1D61239F934A25751C0A960958260 NYTimes Ex Officer Is Alert After Surgery but Not Talking Again http query.nytimes.com gst fullpage.html?res 9B05E1D71239F935A25751C0A960958260 NYTimes Injured in 88, Officer Awakes in 96 http query.nytimes.com gst fullpage.html?res 9907E2D9153FF935A25757C0A961958260 NYTimes Officer Who Emerged From Long Coma Dies Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . The Momentary Average Interruption Frequency Index MAIFI Ref cite web url http www.ee.iastate.edu jdm ee653 DistributionReliabilityPredictive.ppt title Distribution System Reliability Evaluation first Sree last Yeddanapudi publisher Iowa State University accessdate 18 June 2011 ref is a reliability indicator used by electric power utilities. MAIFI is the average number of momentary interruptions that a customer would experience during a given period typically a year . Electric power utilities may define momentary interruptions differently, with some considering a momentary interruption to be an outage of less than 1 minute in duration while others may consider a momentary interruption to be an outage of less than 5 minutes in duration. MAIFI is calculated as math mbox MAIFI frac mbox total number of customer interruptions less than the defined time mbox total number of customers served math MAIFI has tended to be less reported than other reliability indicators, such as SAIDI , SAIFI , and CAIDI . However, MAIFI is useful for tracking momentary power outages, or blinks, that can be hidden or misrepresented by an overall outage duration index like SAIDI or SAIFI. Momentary power outages are often caused by transient faults, such as lightning strikes or vegetation contacting a power line, and many utilities use autorecloser reclosers to automatically restore power quickly after a transient fault has cleared. MAIFI is specific to the area power utility, state, region, county, power line, etc. because of the many variables that affect the measure high low lightning, number & type of trees, high low winds, etc. Therefore, comparing MAIFI of one power utility to another is not valid and should not be used in this type of benchmarking. It also is difficult to compare this measure of reliability within a single utility. One year may have had an unusually high number of thunderstorms and thus skew any comparison to another year s MAIFI. References Reflist See also SAIDI SAIFI ... more details
