  1. Apse chapel

nofootnotes date January 2011 An apse chapel , in church architecture, is a chapel radiating tangentially from one of the bays or divisions of the apse . It is reached generally by a semicircular passageway, or ambulatory , exteriorly to the walls or piers of the apse. In plan, the normal type of the tangential chapel is semicircular some, however, are pentagonal, and some composed of a small circle, serving as cililhoir, and part of a large circle, as nave some are oblong with eastern apses. In England, sometimes an ambulatory connects the north and south aisle s of the choir and from the ambulatory projects an eastern chapel or chapels. The eastern chevet of Westminster Abbey . surrounded by five apsidal chapels, is the only complete example of this feature in England. The common source of the ambulatory and radiating chapels seems to have been the church of St. Martin of Tours , where originally there was a choir of two bays, and an apse of five bays, surrounded by a single ambulatory and five radiating chapels. Altars, which had before cumbered the nave, could now be placed in the new radiating chapels of the ambulatory, which afforded the necessary access to them. Each apsidal chapel could be treated as a sanctuary, to be entered only by the officiating, priest and his attendants, and the ambulatory served as the necessary nave for the worshippers. The usual number of these radiating chapels is three. Apse chapels are often found in the cathedrals of the Benedictine foundations, and occasionally in those of the Cluniac reform. St. Martin of Tours, St. Savin, and Cluny have five choir chapels Amiens, Beauvais Cologne, and Le Mans have seven apsidal chapels. No ambulatory .... The Ramseys sold the manor in the same year to Richard Baskett, and he died in 1626, leaving a son and heir Richard, who sold it in 1640 to John Warner, Bishop of Rochester . He devised it to his nephew Dr. John Lee, D.D., whose son and heir Lee Warner, of the Inner Temple, sold it in 1678 to Edward Courthop. The Diaconicon contains the thalassidion piscina , a sink that drains into an honorable place where liquids such as the water used to wash holy things may be poured, and where the clergy may wash their hands before serving the Divine Liturgy . The Diaconicon will usually have cabinets or drawers where the vestments and church hangings antependia may be safely stored. 1. Cathedral of Minorca

Image Minorca 0054.JPG thumb 200px right Cathedral of Minorca The Cathedral Basilica of Minorca is a church in Ciutadella de Menorca , Balearic Islands , Spain . It was constructed on the orders of King Alfonso III of Aragon , the conqueror of the island in 1287 on the site of an old mosque . Construction started in 1300 and was finished in 1362, creating a building of the ogival art style in its best period that is notable for the width of the nave , flanked by 6 chapels to each side. The five sided apse is orientated to the east. After the desecration and devastation of the cathedral by the Ottoman Empire Turks under Barbarossa Ottoman admiral Barbarossa in 1558 and the collapse of the vaults of the apse in 1626, the damage was quickly repaired in the original style. In 1795, with the restoration of the old bishopric of Minorca that had existed at the start of the 5th century the parish church of ciutadella came to be the cathedral of the new diocese. Under Bishop Juano , the main facade was constructed in 1813 in a Neoclassical architecture neo classic style contrasting with the Gothic architecture gothic style of the building, while the restored side door called la luz the light keeps some of its medieval ornamentation. In the interior, the baroque chapel of the Angelus dates from the start of the 17th century with exquisitely carved columns. The cathedral was sacked and desecrated in the first days of the Spanish civil war in 1936 but was restored in its current form by the Bishop, Don Bartolome Pascual between 1939 and 1941. During this work, the choir was moved from the nave to its current location in the apse.
