Habbus bin Makhsen al Muzaffar , of the Zirid dynasty, was ruler of Taifa of Granada from 1025 to 1037. He was the successor to his uncle Zawi ben Ziwi . His first minister was Shmuel ha Nagid , the renowned Jewish scholar and politician. Under his rule, the prestige of the teif was greatly increased, and he carried out military campaigns against neighbor states, increasing Granada s territory. After the death of his father Buluggin ibn Ziri , al Mansur ibn Buluggin 984 995 , Hammad s brother, became the head of the Zirid dynasty in Ifriqiya , and installed Hammad as governor of the central Maghreb grossly corresponding to the modern northern Algeria . He took on the Zanata tribes and eventually drove them into Morocco . In 1007 Hammad founded the Al Qal a of Beni Hammad residence of al Qala the Fortress in the Hodna mountains west of Setif and embarked on an extensive building programme, which included a palace and mosque that became famous amongst contemporaries. Following this Hammad gained ever more influence in the western Zirid realm. In 1014 he declared his independence from the Zirids and recognised the Abbasids in Baghdad as being the rightful Caliphs not the Fatimids in Egypt , on whose behalf the Zirids ruled . Abul Hasan al Hasan ibn Ali alternatly known as Al Hassan ibn Ziri 1109 1171 was the last ruler of the Zirid dynasty in Ifriqiya 1121 1152. He succeeded Ali ibn Yahya . Under his reign, piracy became an important source of income, although in turn this destabilised the relationships to the Christian maritime cultures. In order to secure trade in the Mediterranean he was forced to accept dependence on the Norman controlled Sicily. It had been prompted by the actions of its ruler Tamim rule 1062 1108 as a pirate in waters off the Italian peninsula, along with his involvement in Sicily fighting the Norman invasion. The attack was led by Hugh of Pisa , with military aid from Rome the nobleman Pantaleone from Amalfi was also involved, and the whole endeavour had the backing of Matilda of Tuscany . It succeeded in capturing the city, but they could not hold it the money from the plunder was spent on the cathedral at Pisa and to build a new church. Crusade historian Carl Erdmann considers the raid a direct precursor to the First Crusade ganz als Kreuzzug ausgef hrt which occurred eight years later, as it was conducted under the banner of Saint Peter St. Peter against a Muslim ruler who was demonised in the accounts of it, and a form of indulgence was granted to the campaigners by Pope Victor III . unsourced date December 2007 Ibn Hamdis c. 1056 c. 1133 was a Siculo Arabic Sicilian Arab poet. He was born in Noto , near Syracuse, Sicily Syracuse . When he was 31, his town was captured by the Italo Normans Normans and he was forced to move to Andalusia , then still under Muslim control, at Sevilla , where he made friends with prince Muhammad Ibn Abbad Al Mutamid Al Mutamid , who was also a poet. After the death of the latter in an Almoravid prison of Aghmat 1095 , Hamdis moved to central Maghreb Algeria under the protection of prince Mansur ibn Nasir al Mansur . When the latter died, he then moved to Madhiyya in Tunisia , as a guest of the Zirid rulers. Hamdis thence continued to move in most of the Mediterranean Islamic countries until his death at Majorca in 1133. His works include c. 6,000 verses, many of them devoted to his lost Sicily .
