He served in the Pakistan Army from 1958 to 1997 during which time he was considered to be an outstanding officer. He was awarded satar i imtiaz for his services for the Armed forces. Among his peers he was regarded as a moral man with no compromise on rule and regulations. His father, the late Col. Ghulam Qasim Khan Niazi, was a very respected officer of the 1st Punjab Regiment .
