A normal integrated circuit IC socket requires the IC to be pushed into sprung contacts which then grip by friction . For an IC with hundreds of pins, the total insertion force can be very large tens of newton unit newton s , leading to a danger of damage to the device or the circuit board . Also even with relatively small pin counts each extraction is fairly awkward and carries a significant risk of bending pins particularly if the person performing the extraction hasn t had much practice or the board is crowded . Low insertion force LIF sockets reduce the issues of insertion and extraction but the lower the insertion force of a conventional socket, the less reliable the connection is likely to be. With a ZIF socket, before the IC is inserted, a lever or slider on the side of the socket is moved, pushing all the sprung contacts apart so that the IC can be inserted with very little force generally the weight of the IC itself is sufficient with no external downward force required . The lever is then moved back, allowing the contacts to close and grip the pins of the IC. ZIF sockets are much more expensive than standard IC sockets and also tend to take up a larger board area due to the space taken up by the mechanism ... free of insertion force but not a ZIF socket in the traditional sense, does a better job by using ...   more details

Low insertion force sockets LIF are integrated circuit sockets that are designed so the force required to insert or remove a package is low. Initially, the LIF connectors were designed as a cheaper alternative compared to Zero insertion force ZIF connectors, to facilitate programming and testing of equipment. Compared with standard IC sockets, they have a lower friction force between the contacts of the device and the socket, making insertion and removal of the device easier, while at the same time eliminating the need for the complex mechanism that is used in ZIF sockets. The disadvantages of LIF connectors are that the grip force between the contacts is lower, and the contacts can oxidize faster and decrease the lifespan of the connector. With the advent of frequent changes in PC processors, a need arose for these systems. Intel introduced the LIF socket system, in which the processor is inserted into the socket, rather than fixed by a lever. This type of socket was used for some types of 386s and early 486s. This type of socket has been replaced by the zero insertion force ZIF socket, although LIF sockets are now used in modern 1.8 hard disks. 1. Zero force member

Orphan date February 2009 In the field of engineering mechanics , a zero force member refers to a member a single truss segment in a truss which, given a specific structural load load , is at rest neither in tension mechanics tension , nor in compression physical compression . In a truss a zero force member is often found at pins any connections within the truss where no external load is applied and three or fewer truss members meet. Recognizing basic zero force members can be accomplished by analyzing the force s acting on an individual pin in a physical system . NOTE If the pin has an external force or Moment physics moment applied to it, then all of the members attached to that pin are not zero force members UNLESS the external force acts in a manner that fulfills one of the rules below If only two members meet in an unloaded Joint building joint , both are zero force members. If three members meet in an unloaded joint of which two are in a direct line with one another, then the third member is a zero force member. If two members meet in a loaded joint and the line of action of the load coincides with one of the members, the other member is a zero force member. Reasons for Zero force members in a truss system These members contribute to the stability of the structure, by providing buckling prevention for long slender members under compressive forces These members can carry loads in the event that variations are introduced in the normal external loading configuration See also Structural engineering Truss External links http www.vcity.ou.edu demoModules analysis truss truss.htm Truss Overview http em ntserver.unl.edu NEGAHBAN EM223 note12 note12.htm Another Truss Overview Source Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 Equilibrium by C. 1. Insertion sequence

An insertion sequence also known as an IS , an insertion sequence element , or an IS element is a short DNA sequence that acts as a simple transposon transposable element . Insertion sequences have two major characteristics they are small relative to other transposable elements generally around 700 to 2500 base pair bp in length and only code for proteins implicated in the transposition activity they are thus different from other transposons , which also carry accessory genes such as antibiotic resistance genes . These proteins are usually the transposase which catalyses the enzymatic reaction allowing the IS to move, and also one regulatory protein which either stimulates or inhibits the transposition activity. The coding region in an insertion sequence is usually flanked by inverted repeat s. For example, the well known IS 911 1250 bp is flanked by two 36bp inverted repeat extremities and the coding region has two genes partially overlapping orfA and orfAB , coding the transposase OrfAB and a regulatory protein OrfA . http www is.biotoul.fr is IS infos IS3 family.html IS911 A particular insertion sequence may be named according to the form IS n , where n is a natural number number ..., however. 1. Insertion time

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 The term insertion time is used to describe the length of time which is required to rearrange a subcritical mass of fissile material into a prompt critical mass . This is one of the three main requirements in a nuclear weapon design to create a working fission atomic bomb . The need for a short insertion time with plutonium is the reason why the implosion method was chosen for the first plutonium bomb, while with uranium 235 it is possible to use a gun design. The basic requirements are To start with a subcritical system To create a super prompt critical system To make the change between these two states in a length of time insertion time which is shorter than the time between the random appearance of a neutron in the fissile material through spontaneous fission or by other random processes. Also at the right moment in time, neutrons must be injected into the fissile material to start up the fission process. This can be done by several methods. Alpha emitters such as polonium or plutonium 238 can be rapidly combined with beryllium to create a neutron source. 1. Repeater insertion

Repeater insertion is a technique for reducing the time delay associated with long wire lines in integrated circuits. The technique involves cutting the long wire into one or more short wires and inserting a repeater between each new pair of short wires. The time it takes for a signal to travel from one end of a wire to the other end is known as wire line delay or just delay. In an integrated circuit, this delay is characterized by RC circuit RC , the Electrical resistance resistance of the wire R multiplied by the wire s capacitance C . Thus, if the wire s resistance is 100 ohm s and its capacitance is 0.01 Farad microfarad F , the wire s delay is one microsecond s . To first order, the resistance of a wire on an integrated circuit is directly proportional , or linear , according to the wire s length. If a 1 mm length of the wire has 100 ohms resistance, then a 2 mm length will have 200 ohms resistance. For the purposes of our highly simplified discussion, the capacitance of a wire also increases linearly along its length. If a 1 mm length of the wire has 0.01 F capacitance, a 2 mm length of the wire will have 0.02 F, a 3 mm wire will have 0.03 F, and so on. Thus, the time delay through a wire increases with the square of the wire s length. This is true, to first order, for any wire whose cross section remains constant along the length of the wire. border 1 style text align center     wire length         resistance R         capacitance C         time delay t     1 mm 100 ohm 0.01 F 1 s 2 mm 200 ohm 0.04 F 4 s 3 mm 300 ohm 0.09 F 9 s wire resistance capacitance time delay length R C t 1 mm 100 ohm 0.01 F 1 s 2 mm 200 ohm 0.02 F 4 s 3 mm 300 ohm 0.03 F 9 s The interesting consequence of this behavior ... by cutting it in half and inserting a repeater is known as repeater insertion . 1. Self-insertion

Unreferenced date April 2008 Self insertion is a literary device in which an author character who is the real author of a work of fiction appears as a character within that fiction, either overtly or in disguise. Famous examples of self insertion include Dante Alighieri in The Divine Comedy , Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales , Paul Auster s appearance in his The New York Trilogy New York Trilogy , Robert A. Heinlein in his The Number of the Beast novel The Number of the Beast , Victor Hugo in his Les Mis rables , John Fowles in his The French Lieutenant s Woman , Kurt Vonnegut in his Breakfast of Champions , and Stephen King s rendition of himself in the The Dark Tower series Dark Tower novels. Philip K. Dick s novel Radio Free Albemuth includes a major character named Philip K. Dick, but is written from another character s first person point of view. The device should not be confused with a first person narrator , or an author surrogate , or a character somewhat based on the author, whether intentionally or not. Many characters have been described as unintentional self insertions, implying that their author is unconsciously using them as an author surrogate . This is particularly common in Mary Sue Mary Sue fanfiction . Examples Agatha Christie s Ariadne Oliver Martin Amis under his own name in Money novel Money , and as Mark Asprey in London Fields novel London Fields . Anthony Burgess appears as the author P. Alexander in his novel A Clockwork Orange . Isaac Asimov appears as himself in Murder at the A.B.A. . He also appears to be the unnamed writer to whom the Azazel Asimov Azazel stories are narrated. Charlie Kaufman inserted himself as the protagonist of his screenplay Adaptation. Kurt Vonnegut in his novels Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse Five . Somerset Maugham in his novel The Razor s Edge . Fay Weldon s fictional analogue is referred to in Chalcot ... Self Insertion Category Narratology ...   more details
