  1. Xerox art

Xerox art sometimes, more generically, called electrostatic art or copy art is created by putting objects on the glass , or image area, of a photocopier copying machine and by pressing start to making an image. If the object is not flat, or the cover does not totally cover the object, the image is distorted in some way. The curvature of the object, the amount of light that reaches the image surface, the distance of the cover from the glass all affect the final image. Often, with proper manipulation, rather ghostly images can be made. Xerox art appeared shortly after the first Xerox copying machines were made. There are exhibits now in Los Angeles, California Los Angeles and New York City museums of more controlled examples of the form. It is akin to photography . Color copiers added to the form, as can be seen by surrealism surrealist Jan Hathaway s combining color xerography with other media, or Carol Heifetz Neiman s layering prismacolor pencil through successive runs of a color photocopy process 1988 1990 . The San Francisco Bay Area had an active Color Xerox arts scene starting in 1978 many local artists worked in the medium. From post card stores to gallery exhibits, to Barbara Cushman s Color Xerox Calendar this was a busy time for copy art. Xerox art is often used in mail art . It was developed at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto, California , in 1976. Although it did not enter production, and only around ten prototype s were built, it strongly influenced the design of the later Osborne 1 and Compaq Portable computers Citation needed date February 2010 . The NoteTaker was developed by a team that included Adele Goldberg computer scientist Adele Goldberg , Douglas Fairbairn , and Larry Tesler . It drew heavily on earlier research by Alan Kay , who had previously developed the Dynabook project. While the Dynabook was a concept for a transportable computer that was impossible to implement with available technology, the NoteTaker was intended to show what could be done. The computer employed what was then highly advanced technology, including a built in monochrome Computer display display monitor , a floppy disk drive and a Computer mouse mouse . It had 128 kilobyte kB of random access memory RAM , then a very large amount, and used a 1 megahertz MHz central processing unit CPU . It used a version of the Smalltalk operating system that was written for the Xerox Alto computer, which pioneered the graphical user interface .
