    William T. Haines August 7, 1854 June 4, 1919 was an United States American politician and the List of Governors of Maine 49th Governor of Maine . Early years Haines was born in Levant, Maine on August 7, 1854. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1876. He then studied at the Albany Law School and completed his LL.B. degree in 1878. He established a successful law career. In May, 1879, Haines settled at Oakland then West Waterville , Kennebec County, Maine, and commenced the practice of law. He remained there until October, 1880. He then moved to Waterville, Maine . Politics Haines became the county attorney of Kennebec County in 1882. He held that position for five years. He became a member of the Maine State Senate in 1888. He held that position until 1892. He became a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1895. He served as the attorney general of Maine 1896 1901 and then became a member of the governor s executive council 1901 1905 . Governor of Maine Haines was nominated for the governorship of Maine by the Republican Party in 1912. He went on to win the general election by a popular vote. He held the governor s office from January 1, 1913 to January 6, 1915. During his administration, a bond issue was authorized for road improvements. A public utilities bill and an anti trust act were sanctioned. He was unsuccessful in his re election bid. Personal life Haines married Edith S. Hemmenway. He had three children. He was a Unitarian. He was the president of the Ontario Society of Artists , a founding member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour , a founding member of the Canadian Society of Etchers and Printers. He also was a colleague and friend of the Group of Seven artists Group of Seven . Tne National Gallery of Canada has acquired several original Haines art works, as well as the Public Archives of Canada. William E. Coutts, owner of the Coutts Hallmark Coutts Company and a great supporter of the arts in Canada, commissioned 26 artists, including Fred S. Haines first became known in the 1930s as a voice actor on the radio crime series Gangbusters . Four decades later, he would return to radio, starring in many episodes of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater . His best known role was that of nextdoor neighbor Stu Bergman on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow . He joined the show for its eleventh episode in 1951, and remained on the serial for the show s duration. In this role, which he played from 1951 to 1986, Haines became very popular. He won Daytime Emmy Award s in 1976 and 1981, and was First Lady Pat Nixon s favorite soap opera actor. He also earned several Tony Award Tony nominations for his work on Broadway theatre Broadway , and appeared in the film version of The Odd Couple film The Odd Couple .
