Image 1584 Portugal Waghenaer.jpg thumb 500px Portugal 1584 Waghenaer Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer 1533 34 1606 Enkhuizen was a Dutch Chief Mate chief officer and Cartography cartographer who was born in Enkhuizen. He is one of the founding fathers and most famous members of the North Holland school, which played a major role in the early development of Dutch Nautical chart nautical chart making . Between 1550 and 1579 Waghenaer sailed the seas as a chief officer. During these years he must have been in contact with Portuguese, Spanish and Italian seafarers. The knowledge on maritime charts and sailing instructions that he gained from these contacts were of great influence on his later work. After his career as active seafarer, he started working in the port of Enkhuizen as collector of maritime dues. His first publication appeared in 1584, and was called Spieghel der zeevaerdt Mariner s mirror . This chart book combined an atlas of nautical charts and sailing directions with instructions for navigation on the western and north western coastal waters of Europe. It was the first of its kind in the history of maritime cartography, and was an immediate success. A second part was published the next year. Job van Meekeren 1611 6 December 1666, Amsterdam was a Dutch Republic Dutch surgeon . Van Meekeren was a pupil of Nicolaas Tulp and became a surgeon in Amsterdam in 1635. He was respected by outstanding contemporary medical doctors for his knowledge of medical literature and his skills, who made a definite link between anatomy and surgery. He showed a great interest in hand surgery, and interesting is a demonstration of flexor tendon repairs on corpses by one of his pupils. He wrote a book, which gives a good representation of the state of the art of surgery in the seventeenth century in Amsterdam. Names and addresses of patients are fully mentioned, so even today we know exactly where they lived and where the events took place. On the other hand, we also know quite well what the surgeons and doctors looked like through the efforts of many excellent painters who depicted anatomy lessons. In Amsterdam, barber surgeons guilds were very eager to sit for group paintings, centered around the teaching medical doctor. The painter Aert Pietersz in 1603 painted Dr. Sebastiaan Egberts surrounded by 29 surgeons, and in 1619, Dr. Egberts was painted once more, this time with five learning surgeons, by Thomas de Keyzer. Nicolaes Eliasz, named Pickenoy, painted Dr. Johan Fonteyn in 1625, and Rembrandt is well known for the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp 1632 and Dr. Deyman 1656 . It is peculiar that a portrait of van Meekeren could not be traced. http www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov entrez query.fcgi?db PubMed&term van Meekeren .
