  1. Welsh Not

The Welsh Not or Welsh Note was a punishment system used in Wales Welsh schools in the late 19th and early 20th century to dissuade children from speaking Welsh language Welsh . It was represented as a piece of wood, inscribed with the letters WN , that was hung round the necks of children who spoke Welsh in some school s in the 19th century. The not was given to any child overheard speaking Welsh, who would pass it to a different child if overheard speaking Welsh. By the end of the day, the wearer of the not would be given a corporal punishment lashing . The idea of the not was to discourage pupils from speaking Welsh, at a time when English language English was considered by some to be the only suitable medium of instruction . History The use of the not was recorded in the 18th century it was also commonly known as the cwstom , the Welsh stick and the Welsh lead a lump of lead . ref The Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales. Cardiff University of Wales Press 2006 ref The practice was mentioned in the 1847 Treachery of the Blue Books Reports of the commissioners of enquiry into the state of education in Wales . Though highly critical of many aspects of Welsh culture , some of the inspectors commented on the existence of the practice of using nots as being arbitrary and cruel. The report did not endorse the practice. The reports also clearly show that the vast majority of education in Welsh Wales was still conducted in Welsh. In the later decades of the 19th century, education was compulsory but the Welsh not was used only in a minority of schools, and after the School board England ... 1888 , instruction in Welsh in elementary schools became the norm in Welsh speaking areas. ref John ... wales history sites language pages education.shtml BBC article on the Welsh not Category Linguistic rights Category Linguistic discrimination Category Welsh language Category School punishments Category History of Wales br Welsh Not cy Welsh Not eu Welsh Not fr Welsh Not ja Welsh Not ...   more details

  1. Welsh cake

Image Wesh cakes.jpg thumb A tin of home made Welsh cakes Welsh cakes lang cy picau ar y maen , pice bach , cacen gri or teisen radell are traditional Wales Welsh snacks. The cakes are also known as bakestones within Wales because they are traditionally cooked on a bakestone Welsh maen , a cast iron griddle about 1.5  cm or more thick which is placed on the fire or cooker most people refer to them though as griddle scones. Welsh cakes are made from flour, sultanas, raisins, and or currants, and may also include such spices as cinnamon and nutmeg. They are roughly circular, a couple of inches 4&ndash 6  cm in diameter and about half an inch 1&ndash 1.5  cm thick. Welsh cakes are served hot or cold dusted with caster sugar . Unlike scones , they are not usually eaten with an accompaniment, though they are sometimes sold ready split and spread with jam , and they are sometimes buttered. They are often eaten accompanied by a pot of tea . Variation Llech Cymreig cooked with plain flour particularly wholemeal flour rather than the standard self raising flour, and baking powder, resulting in a much flatter and crisper cake. Typically, this variant is made as a slab on a bakestone, or nowadays on a baking tray, hence the name Llech Cymreig literally, Welsh slab . Jam Split popular in the South Wales Valleys Cymoedd De Cymru . As the name suggests, this is a Welsh cake split horizontally, with jam and sometimes butter added, rather like a sandwich.
