WelcombeHotel occupies a 19th century former country mansion house near Stratford upon Avon , Warwickshire which was previously known as Welcombe House . It is a Grade II listed building . Welcombe, which was part of the Manor of Old Stratford, was granted by the Bishop of Worcester in 1537 to John Combe. In 1663 William Combe settled the estate and manor house on his grandson Sir Combe Wagstaffe. In about 1775 the estate was acquired by John Lloyd of Snitterfield. Both his son George 1806 and his grandson John Gameliel Lloyd 1832 served as High Sheriff of Warwickshire . The estate was bought in about 1835 by Mark Philips politician Mark Philips , a wealthy Manchester Cotton Manufacturer and Member of Parliament MP . In about 1866 he commissioned Thomas Newby to build a new mansion house in a Neo Jacobean style to designs by architect Henry Clutton . Philips was High Sheriff in 1851. On his death his brother Robert Needham Philips inherited the estate of almost convert 3400 acre km2 . It is part of the District of Torridge . It is easily reached from the A39 and has a popular beach called Welcombe Mouth, which is a challenge to get to but worth it. Its Welcombe Parish Church parish church is one of only four ancient dedications to Saint Nectan . Welcombe comprises several smaller communities including Welcombe Cross, Darracot, Upcott and Mead. There is a local pottery, pub, The Old Smithy Inn and village stores. There are two small campsites in the area and the South West Coast Path offers stunning views to Lundy . W. G. Hoskins writes St Nectan s Chapel was one of the many medieval chapels in the vast parish of Hartland. It lies in unspoiled country, altogether Cornish in appearance and feeling, with views down the combes to the Atlantic. Welcombe was raised to parochial status in 1508, when the church was enlarged by the addition of the north and south transepts. The square headed screen early 14th century is of unique interest. It is, except for its cornice which is later and much resembles that at Hartland by far the earliest remaining screen in Devon. The lectern is Jacobean and the pulpit restored Tudor. ref W. G. According to Nikolaus Pevsner the building is early medieval, including the low western tower. The pulpit has narrow early Renaissance panels.
