Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A Kriegschule was a General Military School used for basic officer training in Nazi Germany up until the defeat in 1945. All Wehrmacht officers in World War II had passed through a Kriegsschule during their training. The Wehrmacht had five Kriegsschulen at Potsdam , Dresden , M nchen , Hannover , and Wiener Neustadt . Officer candidates, known as Fahnenjunker s undertook an extensive eight week course, aimed at giving them a good knowledge of the basics of command. After completion of the course, the officer candidate moved off to his chosen Truppenschule or branch of service school. An example of a Truppenschule is Panzertruppenschule I in Munster, but there were also schools catering for all branches of service. Engineer s, Physician s and Veterinarian s studied longer at a military Akademie instead progressing to a military branch school. Each branch of the Wehrmacht Army, Navy, and Air Force maintained their own version of the Long Service Award and the decoration was issued for 4 4th class , 12 3rd class , 18 2nd class , 25 1st class , and 40 1939 special class Years of Service. Recipients of lower year awards would wear the decoration simultaneously with higher level decorations. The Long Service Award was retroactive throughout a service member s career, encompassing Reichswehr service as well as service dating during and before World War I . As such, there were a handful of 40 year awards presented, even though the Third Reich itself existed for only twelve. The Waffen SS , considered an integral part of the German armed forces during World War II, maintained their own SS Long Service Award with similar award criteria to the standard military version.
