Expert subject Journalism date November 2008 POV date July 2008 Watchdogjournalism aims to hold accountable public personalities and institutions, whose functions impact social and political life. The term lapdog journalism , for journalism biased in favour of personalities and institutions, is sometimes used as a conceptual opposite to watchdogjournalism. Watchdogjournalism is commonly found in mainstream media , investigative journalism , alternative media , think tank s, or citizen journalism , such as blog s. While it is found in mainstream media and journalists check on government at all levels, the amount of auditing can vary over time. Since independent media and think tanks are not profit oriented, they have more latitude in which to adopt strong positions and cover a wide range of topics. However, it is also more difficult to determine bias or the backing of non mainstream outlets so those are sometime subject to covert exploitation by well funded interests. A notable example of watchdogjournalism was Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein s reporting of the Richard Nixon Nixon era Watergate scandal for The Washington Post that eventually led to the resignation of the president. File Coromandel Watchdog logo.png thumb right Coromandel Watchdog logo. Coromandel Watchdog is an environmental organisation lobbying in opposition to mining on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. The Coromandel Peninsula is an area of high scenic values due to the presence of the original forest cover and a coastline that is popular for recreation. Goldmining has been carried out since the late 19th century. To the south of the peninsula the Martha Mine at Waihi is still operating. Coromandel Watchdog began protests and lobbying in the 1970s against the activities of mining companies. It was instrumental in having conservation land on the Coromandel Peninsula protected under Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act 1991 Crown Minerals Act . In 2009, Watchdog was reactivated after a period of inactivity. The National led Government is proposing the removal of up to 2,500 hectares of Coromandel land from Schedule 4 and Coromandel Watchdog have publicly come out and stated that they will fight the current proposals. Journalism In journalism , a source is a person, publication, or other record or document that gives timely information . Outside journalism, sources are sometimes known as news sources . Examples of sources include official records, publications or broadcasts, officials in government or business, organizations or corporations, witness es of crime, accidents or other events, and people involved with or affected by a news event or issue. According to Shoemaker 1996 and McQuail 1994 , there are a multitude of factors that tend to condition the acceptance of sources as bona fide by investigative journalists. Reporters are expected to develop and cultivate sources, especially if they regularly cover a specific topic, known as a beat . Beat reporters must, however, be cautious of becoming too close to their sources. Reporters often, but not always, give greater leeway to sources with little experience.
