Wassily Sapellnikoff OldStyleDate 2 November 1867 21 October ndash 17 March 1941 , was a Russia n pianist. A more true transliteration of his name is Vasily Lvovich Sapelnikov , however when he concertised in England he chose the above version. He was born in Odessa . He studied at the Odessa Conservatory under Louis Brassin and Sophie Menter , and became professor of piano at Moscow Conservatory in 1897. He eventually moved to Leipzig and finally settled in Munich . He was one of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky s lovers, having gone with the composer on a tour to Germany , France and England . At his debut in Hamburg in 1888, he played Tchaikovsky s Piano Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor with the composer conducting. This concert was a great success and a catalyst for his budding career as a concert pianist in Western Europe. He was the first to play this concerto in England. Sapellnikoff first appeared in England in 1889 playing the Tchaikovsky concerto at a Royal Philharmonic concert, under the composer s baton. He became a favourite at Philharmonic concerts, and created a furore in 1892 by his performance of Franz Liszt Liszt s Piano Concerto No. 1 Liszt E flat concerto , accepting a second engagement for the same season. In 1877 as a military physician in the Balkans during the Russo Turkish War 1877 1878 Russo Turkish War , he began experiencing mood swings and hallucinations. Kandinsky performed self diagnosis, and he referred to his mental condition as Prim re Verr cktheit which has been translated to mean a schizophrenia schizophrenic like state . In 1885 Kandinsky published a book written in German on pseudo hallucinations in which he describes and details hallucinations largely based on his personal experiences. In 1889, he took his own life by taking an overdose of morphine . In a monograph published posthumously in 1890, Kandinsky described a condition which involved being alienated from one s personal mental processes, combined with delusions of being physically and mentally influenced by external forces. The syndrome he described is now known as Kandinsky Cl rambault syndrome , named along with French psychiatrist Ga tan Gatian de Clerambault . De Basil was born Vassily Grigorievich Voskresensky in Kaunas , Lithuania his year of birth is given variously as 1880 or 1886. He is said to have been a colonel in the Cossack army although his claim to the title Colonel is disputed. De Basil was demobilised from the army in 1919 and worked as an entrepreneur in Paris. Phalanx was an association of artists formed in Munich in 1901 who were opposed to old fashioned and conservative viewpoints in art. Founding members were Wassily Kandinsky , Rolf Niczky , Waldemar Hecker , and Wilhelm H sgen . Kandinsky was elected president of the association and also became the director of the Phalanx School of Painting. The association organized twelve exhibitions between 1901 and 1904 which in addition to those of its members, featured works by Claude Monet , Jugendstil Art Nouveau artists, Symbolists and Post Impressionism Post Impressionist artists Paul Signac , Felix Vallotton and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec . Phalanx was where Kandinsky met Gabriele M nter , an art student at the school. She was to become his pupil, intimate companion, and critic until they separated in 1914.
