Image Warrendela Rue.jpg thumb WarrendelaRueWarrenDelaRue 18 January 1815 19 April 1889 was a United Kingdom British astronomer and chemist , most famous for his pioneering work in astronomical photography . Biography He was born in Guernsey , the son of the founder of the large firm of stationers of that name in London . Having completed his education in Paris , he entered his father s business, but devoted his leisure hours to chemical and electrical researches, and between 1836 and 1848 published several papers on these subjects. In 1820, WarrenDelaRue enclosed a platinum coil in a vacuum tube and passed an electric current through it, thus creating the world s first light bulb . The design was based on the concept that the high melting point of platinum would allow it to operate at high temperatures and that the evacuated chamber would contain fewer gas molecules to react with the platinum, improving its longevity. Although it was an efficient design, the cost of the platinum made it impractical for commercial use. Citation needed date March 2007 Attracted to astronomy ... Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . Charles deLaRue 3 August 1643 27 May 1725 , known in Latin as Carolus Ruaeus , was one of the great orators of the Society of Jesus in France in the seventeenth century He entered the novitiate on 7 September 1659, and being afterwards professor of the humanities and rhetoric, he attracted attention while still young by a poem on the victories of Louis XIV of France Louis XIV . Pierre Corneille translated it and offered it to the king, saying that his work did not equal the original of the young Jesuit. He wrote several tragedies, published an edition of Virgil , and wrote several Latin poems. After having several times refused to permit him to go to Canada , his superiors assigned him to preaching as an orator he was much admired by the court and the king. His funeral orations on the Dukes of Burgundy and Luxemburg, and that on Jacques B nigne Bossuet , his sermons on Les Calamit s publiques and The Dying Sinner have been regarded as masterpieces by the greatest masters. He preached missions among the Protestants of Languedoc for three years. He was a most virtuous religious, and during his last years endured courageously great infirmities.
