At the time of his birth, the Territory was under the rule of Danish West Indies . Jackson was an important figure in the struggle for increased civil liberties and workers rights on the islands. He petitioned for freedom of the press , was involved in the territory s labor movement , and, when the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1917, he lobbied for citizenship for the islanders. Jackson worked as an educator and later a bookkeeper before becoming involved in the politics of the Danish West Indies. He traveled to Denmark and successfully petitioned for the repeal of a 1779 law which prohibited independent newspapers and enforced strict censorship on all publications in the territory. Upon returning home, he established the first free newspaper, The Herald . The date of this event, November 1, is celebrated as an annual public holiday known as Liberty Day , D. Hamilton Jackson Day , or Bull and Bread Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands. With the help of Ralph Bough, Jackson organized the first labor union in the Danish West Indies in 1913. Coleman served in Washington Artillery in the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War , and was part of the Confederate army that surrendered at Battle of Appomattox Courthouse Appomattox . He returned to New Orleans and became a manufacturer and dealer of farm equipment, and an organizer of New Orleans s first electric lighting company. He was elected as a Republican Party United States Republican to Congress in 1888, but lost his bid for reelection to Matthew D. Lagan , the previous holder of the seat. Coleman was the last Republican elected to the House from Louisiana until David C. Treen in 1973. He was the last Republican to hold this seat, until Joseph Cao won it from Bill Jefferson in 2008. Coleman ran for Congress two more times, for governor twice, and for lieutenant governor once, losing each time. From 1899 1905, he was the melter and refiner for the United States Mint in New Orleans. He died in Biloxi in 1926 and is buried at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Hamilton Barnum 1878 1937 , of Cleveland, Ohio , was a stamp collector who helped advance philately during the early years of the hobby. Collecting interests Barnum started his collection of postage stamps in 1890 at the age of 12 and joined stamp clubs in his area, such as the Garfield Perry Stamp Club in Cleveland, which he joined as a member in 1895 and served as club president in 1902. Philatelic activity Barnum was active in organized philately. At the American Philatelic Society then called the American Philatelic Association he became an active member in 1894 and served the society in a variety of positions including being named to the Board of Vice Presidents. He was also active in the Philatelic Sons of America the largest stamp club in the United States at the time during the time when it started to attract young collectors. For the remainder of his life and philatelic career he made it a point of participating in all major activities of both philatelic societies. Born near Dixon, Illinois , Hamilton moved to Miami County, Kansas , with his parents, in 1868 and to Prairie Township in Keokuk County, Iowa , in 1874. He attended the country schools and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in June 1884. He was Admission to the bar in the United States admitted to the bar in 1884. Returning to Keokuk County, he commenced practice in Sigourney, Iowa . He served as Postmaster of Sigourney from 1894 to 1898. In November 1906, Hamilton ran as a Democratic Party United States Democrat against longtime Republican Congressman John F. Lacey in the general election for Iowa s 6th congressional district. After defeating Lacey, Hamilton became the only Democrat in Iowa s congressional delegation in the 60th United States Congress Sixtieth Congress. He ran for re election in 1908, and won renomination from his party s district convention. However, in a general election in which Republicans swept all major races on the ballot in Iowa, Hamilton was defeated by Republican Nathan E. Kendall in a close race. In all he served in Congress from March 4, 1907 to March 3, 1909. He resumed the practice of law in Sigourney. In 1918, he was elected judge of the district court of the sixth judicial district of Iowa, in which capacity he served until his death in Rochester, Minnesota , on August 21, 1936. He is best known for adapting Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 , directing The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension , and helping write Big Trouble in Little China . Biography Richter graduated from Dartmouth College and attended USC film school. He began script writing for Hollywood in the 1970s. He wrote the hit comedy Slither 1973 film Slither 1973 , followed by two similarly styled comedies, Peeper film Peeper 1975 and Nickelodeon film Nickelodeon 1976 . He branched into other genres starting with the Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake in 1978. He continued writing scripts throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In the early 1980s Richter formed his own production company with producer Neil Canton , Canton Richter, and directed the sci fi cult classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension . The film did poorly at the box office and the company broke up. Richter continued to write screenplays however, and has since written Home For The Holidays and Stealth film Stealth . W. Griffith House is a historic building in La Grange, Kentucky La Grange , Kentucky in the United States . It was owned by movie director D. W. Griffith , who rose to fame with his movies Birth of a Nation and Intolerance film Intolerance . The house was originally constructed in 1905 as a home for a Charles and Sue Smith, but it later became a funeral home. Griffith sold the house in 1940, but his niece lived there until 1950, when it was sold once again to be made into apartments. Griffith never returned to the area, not even to receive the honorary doctorate in literature the University of Louisville gave him in 1945. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba , and raised in Gimli, Manitoba , he completed his Bachelor of Arts BA at United College , Bachelor of Education BEd at the University of Manitoba , and his Master of Fine Arts MFA at the University of Iowa . He was a long time professor of writing at the University of Victoria in British Columbia . His writing often focuses on cultural differences and involve irony and symbol ism. His short stories involve normal people in normal situations, yet under certain circumstances, lead unusual and surprising lives. Valgardson has won numerous awards and accolades including the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize for The Girl With the Botticelli Face 1992 and the Books in Canada First Novel Award for Gentle Sinners 1980 .
