    VLAN hopping virtual local area network hopping is a exploit computer security computer security exploit , a method of attacking networked resources on a VLAN . The basic concept behind all VLAN hopping attacks is for an attacking host on a VLAN to gain access to traffic on other VLANs that would normally not be accessible. There are two primary methods of VLAN hopping switch spoofing and double tagging. In a switch spoofing attack, an attacking host that is capable of speaking the tagging and trunking protocols used in maintaining a VLAN imitates a trunking switch. Traffic for multiple VLANs is then accessible to the attacking host. In a double tagging attack, an attacking host prepends two VLAN tags to packets that it transmits. The first header which corresponds to the VLAN that the attacker is really a member of is stripped off by a first switch the packet encounters, and the packet is then forwarded. The second, false, header is then visible to the second switch that the packet encounters. This false VLAN header indicates that the packet is destined for a host on a second, target VLAN.     A private VLAN is a technique in computer networking where a virtual LAN VLAN contains network switch switch ports that are restricted, such that they can only communicate with a given uplink . The restricted ports are called private ports . Each private VLAN typically contains many private ports, and a single uplink. The uplink will typically be a port or link aggregation group connected to a router , Firewall computing firewall , server computing server , Internet service provider provider network, or similar central resource. The switch forwards all frame telecommunications frames received on a private port out the uplink port, regardless of VLAN ID or destination MAC address . Frames received on an uplink port are forwarded in the normal way i.e., to the port hosting the destination MAC address, or to all VLAN ports for unknown destinations or broadcasting computing broadcast frames . Peer to peer traffic is blocked. Note that while private VLANs provide isolation at the data link layer, communication at higher layers may still be possible. A typical application for a private VLAN is a hotel or Ethernet to the home network where each room or apartment has a port for Internet access . Similar port isolation is used in Ethernet based ADSL DSLAM s. Allowing direct data link layer communication between customer nodes would expose the local network to various security attacks, such as ARP spoofing , as well as increasing the potential for damage due to misconfiguration.     unref date September 2009 In computer networking , a virtual storage area network VSAN is a collection of ports from a set of connected Fibre Channel switch es, that form a virtual Fibre Channel fabric fabric . Ports within a single switch can be partitioned into multiple VSANs, despite sharing hardware resources. Conversely, multiple switches can join a number of ports to form a single VSAN. VSANs were designed by Cisco Systems Cisco , modelled after the VLAN virtual local area network VLAN concept in Ethernet networking. In October 2004, the Technical Committee T11 approved VSAN technology into the American National Standards Institute ANSI as the standard. A VSAN, like each FC fabric, can offer different high level protocols such as Fibre Channel Protocol FCP , Fibre Channel over IP FCIP , FICON , iSCSI . Each VSAN is a separate self contained fabric using distinctive security policies, zones, events, memberships, and name services. Traffic is also separate. Unlike a typical fabric that is resized switch by switch, a VSAN can be resized port by port. The use of VSANs allows traffic to be isolated within specific portions of the network. If a problem occurs in one VSAN, that problem can be handled with a minimum of disruption to the rest of the network. VSANs can also be configured separately and independently.
