Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 UnitedPressInternational UPI was the first wire service to start its own radio news network. A late 1950s offshoot of UPI s television footage service, UPI Movietone, and known as UPI Audio, it began as an actuality service, selling the sounds of newsmakers and UPI reporters to client radio stations. In early 1966, UPI acquired the assets and some key personnel of a similarly named but previously unrelated competing service, Radio PressInternational. Out of that merger came an audio service that at its peak served more than a thousand U.S. radio stations and many foreign clients. In the early 1970s, it began offering a newscast at the top of the hour. Soon thereafter, it added live sportscasts and business reports. The service name was changed from UPI Audio to UPI Radio Network in 1983 to reflect the greater focus on live programming. Unlike most commercial networks, which paid local stations to air their programming and commercials UPI charged stations cash for its broadcast services, allowing them to sell their own advertising within the newscast. It is the model that former rival wire service Associated Press also used from its later beginnings in the radio network field in the mid 1970s. After a long period of changing ownerships, business models and bankruptcies, UPI declined into a shell of a news service by 1999, when its then Saudi Arabian ownership was convinced by its handpicked CEO to exit the broadcasting business UnitedPress had pioneered back in the 1930s. The rump UPI sold its client list of its radio network and broadcast wire to its former archrival, the AP. Unreferenced date October 2007 POV date December 2007 Pakistan PressInternational PPI is a news agency founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press Association PPA . The name was changed in 1968. It was first started by Mr. Muzzam Ali, the Chief Editor of Associated Press of Pakistan APP . The agency objective was to provide competition to APP s monopoly. It began its service by hand, only in Karachi . PPA also built up a network of correspondents in the smaller cities and towns in Pakistan . This was in contrast to APP, which had coverage in a limited number of large cities. For foreign news the agency signed up with the Agence France Presse AFP in 1957, and a year later became the first Asian partner of DPA. PPA also posted a correspondent in the Middle East , an area of special interest to Pakistani newspapers. In 1958, the agency installed the teleprinters in the offices of its clients. The United States Student Press Association USSPA was a national organization of campus newspapers and editors active in the 1960s. It formed a national news agency called College Press Service CPS . USSPA was developed as a program of the National Student Association NSA . USSPA later became independent, then suffered financial setbacks in the early 1970s, and disbanded. The College Press Service was spun off and became a progressive alternative news collective in Denver, Colorado. It, too, later folded, selling its name to a commercial enterprise, and distributing the funds to progressive groups in Denver. In the mid 1960s, radical staff members of CPS split off from the group and established Liberation News Service LNS . Roger Ebert served as president of the USSPA in 1963 64.
