refimprove date December 2008 Community unionism describes the spectrum of ways in which trade unions work collaboratively with community organisations over issues of common importance to both. Developed as a term to describe grass roots union community alliances in the US which vary widely in their goals and capacity for creating durable links, it has been extensively written about in Canada Tufts 1998, Lipsig Mumme, 1988 and 2003, Cranford , and more recently, in Australia. Most recently the contrast between community unionism on the one hand and both social movement unionism and the organising model of trade unionism on the other has been brought to the fore, particularly in relation to their differing goals, and the place of the union in union community alliances. labor New Unionism is a term which has been used twice in the history of the labour movement , both times involving moves to broaden the trade union agenda. 1880s First was the development within the United Kingdom British trade union movement in the late 1880s. The New Unions differed from the older craft union s in several respects. They were generally less exclusive than craft unions and attempted to recruit a wide range of workers. To encourage more workers to join, the New Unions kept their entrance fees and contributions at a relatively low level. Some new unions, such as the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Labourers Union Dockers Union and the GMB Union Gasworkers developed in the direction of general union ism. They recruited unskilled and semi skilled workers, such as dockers, seamen, gasworkers and general labourers. At the outset, the New Unions were associated with militancy and willingness to take industrial action , unlike the more conciliatory craft unions. A notable strike associated with the New Unions was the London Dock Strike of 1889 . Many of the New Unions had leaders who espoused socialism socialist ideas. Such leaders included Tom Mann , Ben Tillett , Will Thorne and John Burns . Craft unionism refers to organizing a union in a manner that seeks to unify workers in a particular industry along the lines of the particular craft or trade that they work in by class or skill level. It contrasts with industrial unionism , in which all workers in the same industry are organized into the same union, regardless of differences in skill . Craft unionism is perhaps best exemplified by many of the construction unions that formed the backbone of the old American Federation of Labor which later merged with the industrial unions of the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form the AFL CIO . In the politics of Belgium , Unionism or Union of Opposites union des oppositions is a Belgian political movement which existed from the 1820s to 1846. In the present day, the term unionists is sometimes used in a Belgian context to describe those who oppose the partition of Belgium , such as members of the Belgische Unie Union Belge party. History It existed before and after the Belgian Revolution of 1830 and advocated the union of Roman Catholic s and Liberalism liberal s against the policies of William I of the Netherlands . The new nation s motto, L Union fait la force or unity makes strength , referred to this union rather than to the union of the country s different linguistic communities. The liberals were initially quite favourable towards the lay policy of William s enlightened absolutism but more and more they changed their attitude, giving less and less importance to their struggle against church influence and more and more importance to political liberties, which William I was obstinately refusing to grant. Those following this new trend were known as radical liberals , as opposed to the Voltaire Voltairian liberals lib raux voltairiens who supported the englightened absolutist regime and gave rise to Orangism Belgium Orangism . This evolution enabled the radical liberals to make a compromise with the Catholics, who were ready to make certain concessions as to the freedom of the press and freedom of religion in return. From 1825, tienne de Gerlache made a failed attempt at a compromise and reconciliation. At the end of 1827, in Li ge , the Catholic newspaper le Courrier de la Meuse and the liberal newspaper Mathieu Laensbergh underwent a rapprochement. unreferenced date May 2008 Serbian Montenegrin unionism is a political ideology which arose during and after the Montenegrin referendum on independence in 2006. It is promoted in Montenegro and advocates Montenegro s place witihin a federal political union with Serbia. History Friendship between Montenegro and Serbia is long standing. In 1878, Montenegro and Serbia achieved independence along with Romania from the Ottoman Empire . The two entities since shared all essential experiences they fought as part of the Balkan League when it came to removing the Ottomans from Rumelia during the First Balkan War , and they fought alongside each other against Austria Hungary and Germany during the First World War . Plans for the two kingdoms to merge had for some time been an issue when in 1918, the two countries found themselves existing as one state. However, the Kingdom of Montenegro had been absorbed by the Kingdom of Serbia and although the name of Montenegro remained, its status was reduced to ceremonial local administration within a wider Serbian kingdom. The Montenegrin monarchy was removed and has since remained exiled in France . These events led to the Christmas Uprising of 1919 in which the population of Montenegro demonstrated against the Serbian takeover. When Yugoslavia reformed during World War II , Montenegro had been awarded republic status alongside a Serbian entity reduced in size. When in 1991 and 1992, the remaining outstanding Yugoslav republics voted for independence, Montenegro had chosen to continue a Pan Slavic union by the name of Yugoslavia with Serbia.
