Unreferenced date September 2007 Multilineal evolution is a 20th century social theory about the evolution of societies and culture s. It is composed of many competing theories by various sociologists and anthropologists. This theory has replaced the older 19th century set of theories of unilinealevolution . When critique of classical social evolutionism became widely accepted, modern anthropological and sociological approaches have changed to reflect their responses to the critique of their predecessor. Modern theories are careful to avoid unsourced, ethnocentric speculation, comparisons, or value judgements more or less regarding individual societies as existing within their own historical contexts. These conditions provided the context for new theories such as cultural relativism and multilineal evolution. By the 1940s cultural anthropologists such as Leslie White and Julian Steward sought to revive an evolutionary model on a more scientific basis, and succeeded in establishing an approach known as the neoevolutionism . White rejected the opposition between primitive and modern societies but did argue that societies could be distinguished based on the amount of energy they harnessed, and that increased energy allowed for greater social differentiation. Steward on the other hand rejected the 19th century notion of progress, and instead called attention to the Darwinian notion of adaptation, , arguing that all societies had to adapt to their environment in some way. The anthropologists Marshall Sahlins and Elman Service wrote a book, Evolution and Culture , in which they attempted ... continue to reject 19th century notions of progress and the three original assumptions of unilinealevolution. Merge Evolutionary virology date February 2010 Viral evolution is a subfield of evolutionary biology and virology that is specifically concerned with the evolution of virus es. Many virus es, in particular RNA virus es, have short generation times and relatively high mutation rates on the order of one point mutation or more per genome per round of replication for RNA viruses . This elevated mutation rate, when combined with natural selection , allows viruses to quickly adapt to changes in their host environment. Viral evolution is an important aspect of the epidemiology of viral diseases such as influenza influenza virus , AIDS HIV , and hepatitis e.g. HCV . It also causes problems in the development of successful vaccine s and antiviral drug s, as Resistance to antiviral drugs resistant mutation s often appear within weeks or months after the beginning of the treatment. RNA viruses are also used as a model system to study evolution in the laboratory. One of the main theoretical models to study viral evolution is the quasispecies model , as the viral quasispecies . Inter host and intra host evolution In evolutionary virology and to an extent in the wider field of pathology , inter host evolution is considered to represent the geological, i.e. visible or detectable, evolution of a virus while intra host evolution represents the invisible evolution of a virus. Adaptive changes acquired by inter host evolution are rarely lost once acquired. Changes acquired by intra host evolution may be lost if the evolutionary landscape changes, for example a population of viruses may become resistant to an antiviral drug while the host patient takes it, but rapidly revert to wild type if treatment ... 2002 . Biocultural evolution ref http anthro.palomar.edu synthetic glossary.htm ref refers to historical human evolution evolutionary processes that occur as a result of culture s interaction with biology . Cultural factors The human predispositon for culture is perhaps one of the most critical aspects of human evolution and, as such, has had significant effects both on human and nonhuman biology . Given the complexity with which humans express their culture and the cultural interrelation of e.g. ecology and technology , changes in human environmental control is a hallmark of cultural impact on biological systems. Emergent evolution is the hypothesis that, in the course of evolution , some entirely new properties, such as life and consciousness , appear at certain critical points, usually because of an unpredictable rearrangement of the already existing entities. The concept has influenced the development of systems theory and Complex systems complexity theory . Historical context The word emergence emergent was first used to describe the concept by George Lewes in volume two of his 1875 book Problems of Life and Mind p.  412 . Henri Bergson covered similar themes in the popular book Creative Evolution book Creative Evolution in 1907. It was further developed by Samuel Alexander in his Gifford Lectures at University of Glasgow Glasgow during 1916 18 and published as Space, Time, and Deity 1920 . The term emergent evolution was coined by C. Lloyd Morgan in his own Gifford lectures of 1921 22 at University of St. Andrews St. Andrews and published as Emergent Evolution 1923 . In an appendix to one lecture in his book, Morgan acknowledged the contributions of Roy Wood Sellars Evolutionary Naturalism 1922 .
