  1. Turntablist transcription methodology

Turntablist Transcription Methodology , or TTM , is a notation system for scratching and turntablism designed by John Carluccio a Brooklyn based artist best known for the Battlesounds documentary film on turntablism , by Ethan Imboden, and by Raymond Pirtle. It is intended to be an intuitive graphical representation of the movement of a record whilst performing with a turntable, and was originally documented in a booklet form for distribution. The system has achieved acclaim from a number of recognisable turntablist s, and is becoming increasingly accepted as a valuable method for transcribing turntablist music. However, it has not yet seen many compositions released in written format as is the project s intention only the future will reveal the eventual extent of its usage for this purpose. Lesser used systems of turntable notation have been devised by other Turntablists, and whilst they are less commonly available and or used, they deserve a mention. One example of an alternative system is that developed by composer Ra l Ya ez for DJ Radar , which was used to transcribe his Concerto For Turntable and uses traditional musical staves and notes to record the scratches. This system is limited in comparison to TTM, however, as it does not give such clear directions over the many aspects of scratching, such as velocity, direction, and Scratching Crab Scratch crabbing . 1. DJ digital controller

No footnotes date February 2008 Image M Audio DJ Blax.jpg right thumb 250px M Audio digital DJ system DJ digital controllers are MIDI controllers or USB to Analog signal analog devices used with turntables or CDJ units with timecode discs for playing computer based music tracks, normally at clubs or events. They are hardware that connect to DJ software, installed on a PC or laptop, that allow for control of the DJ software with the hardware interface of the controller. The GUI interface of the DJ software is normally operated by the PC keyboard and mouse. Operation Section OR date October 2009 The controllers are similar in operation to a mixer turntable CD turntable set up, so traditional DJs, or turntablism turntabalists , that are used to using these can generally relate to them better than a software interface. Some come with substantial shuttle jog s that mimic turntable control of a track, though with less accuracy. The software on the computer will generally play mp3 or wave files. The upside of using these, or any Software based DJ, is that there is no need to carry around CDs. This is particularly beneficial to Mobile disc jockey s who are increasingly using computer based DJ set ups. A problem with controllers is their latency engineering latency , that is, the time between manipulating the jog shuttle controllers and the effect on the music track. However this does vary with computer speed, sound card latency, and MIDI latency, and by either changing configuration settings or upgrading hardware this problem can often be easily resolved. The price of DJ controllers has recently come down to the point where they are now a lot more common, Vague date February 2009 and increasingly DJs are using these instead of CD or phonograph vinyl turntables . 1. Controllerism

Controllerism is the art and practice of using musical software controllers e.g. MIDI , Open Sound Control OSC , Joystick , etc. to build upon, mix, scratch, remix, effect, modify, or otherwise create music, usually by a Digital DJ or Controllerist . Controllerism developed at the peak of USB midi controller market during the turn of the century.
