Mouth trumpet is a vocal technique that imitates the sound of the trumpet . The mouth trumpet sound is produced by using the vocal folds vocal cords to produce the desired Pitch music pitch and passing the sound through the lips that are held together with just enough tension so that they vibrate at the same frequency as the vocal cords, producing a trumpet like sound. In effect, mouth trumpet is like playing a trumpet backwards. To play a trumpet, the player vibrates the lips against the mouthpiece by blowing a stream of air through the lips. The desired pitch is produced by varying the length of the air column in the tubing of the trumpet by the use of three valves. The vocal cords are not normally used in playing the trumpet. To produce the mouth trumpet sound, the pitch is produced by the vocal cords before it reaches the lips and the lips then buzz to add the trumpet effect. Lip trumpet is another trumpet imitation technique also known as lip buzzing in that air is blown through squeezed lips to make them squeak like with the real trumpet to produce a tone without vocal cords. The pitch is controlled by lip tension and position. The timbre can also be varied by tongue position. Particularly difficult is here to control the lip humidity which strongly changes the available pitch range. Both techniques can be combined to play 2 note polyphonic. Similar play techniques were employed in jug band s to blow the Jug musical instrument jug , stove pipe and partly watering can. Image TrumpetMajor.jpg thumb 1st American edition of The Trumpet Major The Trumpet Major is a novel by Thomas Hardy published in 1880. The heroine, Anne Garland, is pursued by three suitors John Loveday, the trumpet major in a British regiment, honest and loyal his brother Bob, a flighty sailor and Festus Derriman, the cowardly son of the local squire. The setting is the Napoleonic wars , and it seems Miss Garland has a penchant for men in uniform. Of the two brothers, John fights with Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington Wellington in the Peninsular War , and Bob serves with Admiral Nelson Nelson at Battle of Trafalgar Trafalgar . Unusually for a Hardy novel, most of the characters live happily ever after however, the ending is debatably an ominous one. A Daboll trumpet is an air trumpet foghorn which had been developed by an United States American , Celadon Leeds Daboll , of New London, Connecticut . It was basically a small coal fired hot air engine , which compressed air in a cylinder on top of which was a reed horn. The Daboll trumpet, consists of a steel reed vibrating within a horn, which uses the hot air engine to force cold air by means of an air pump into a boiler, from which it escapes into the horn through a valve, causing the vibrations of the reed, which are regulated by an automatic cam. Daboll s cousin, Charles Miner Daboll 1823 , inventor of the Daboll bushing , is credited with developing the Daboll trumpet for practical use. The following citation is from Scientific American Supplement , Vol. XIX, No. 470, Jan. 3, 1885. blockquote The Daboll trumpet was invented by Mr. C.L. The designer of that trumpet, Larry Ramirez, spoke to Ferguson about a valve slide trombone that he had designed some 12 years earlier, and this eventually led to Ramirez designing a new valve slide trombone for Ferguson, called the Superbone, in October 1974. ref name autogenerated1 Email correspondence with Larry Ramirez ref After touring with the Superbone, Ferguson spoke to Ramirez about making a trumpet with the same valve slide capabilities. In order to preserve the length of tubing required to make a B music flat trumpet, the hand slide could only be made with four positions instead of the standard seven on a trombone. In addition, the bell was bent up approximately 20 degrees so that the hand slide could be extended and clear the bell. This instrument was dubbed the Firebird , and went into production on or around May 28, 1983. ref name autogenerated1 By 2000, Ramirez came up with a design for a full seven position Firebird trumpet.
