Compared with acute toxicity . Two distinct situations need to be considered Prolonged exposure to a substance For example if a person drinks too much alcohol on a regular basis then their health may suffer as a result. The alcohol does not have a long biological halflife but it is supplied on a regular basis to the body of the person. Prolonged internal exposure because a substance remains in the body for a long time For example if a person were to ingest radium much of it would be absorbed into the bones where it would exert a harmful effect on a person s health. Mitochondrial toxicity is a condition in which the mitochondrion mitochondria of a body s cells become damaged or decline significantly in number it occurs as a side effect of certain antiretroviral drug s used to treat human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV . Causes While the exact causes of mitochondrial toxicity are not known, research has shown that a certain group of anti viral drugs used to treat HIV, specifically nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor s NRTIs , interfere with an enzyme needed in the production of mitochondria. ref http www.thebody.com pinf mitochondrial.html ref Symptoms The disruption of cell function that accompanies the condition can cause both mild and severe problems in people suffering from mitochondrial toxicity. The most commonly observed symptom is muscle weakness, or myopathy . orphan date December 2008 Protein toxicity with proteinuria can result in those with preexisting kidney disease , or those who have lost kidney function due to age. Consuming more than 2.0 g kg day in protein can stress the kidney even in otherwise healthy people. ref http www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com articles nutrition protein 2 How Much Protein Do You Need? ref Definition Protien toxicity occurs when the body is unable to get rid of the potentially toxic wastes that are generated as a result of protein metabolism. Occurrence Protein toxicity occurs when an individual with impaired kidney function consumes protein rich diet. Specifically proteins from animal sources that are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream and are rapidly metabolized causing the release of high concentration of toxic nitrogenous waste materials. Symptoms Unexplained vomiting and a loss of appetite are indicators of protein toxicity. If those two symptoms are accompanied by an ammonia quality on the breath the on set of kidney failure is a likely culprit. People with kidney disease, who are not on dialysis, are advised to avoid consumption of protein if possible, as consuming too much accelerates the condition and can lead to death. Most of the problems stem from the accumulation of unfiltered toxins and wastes from protein metabolism . Kidney function naturally declines with age due to the gradual loss of nephrons filters in the kidney. Therefore, a 90 year old cannot safely consume the same amount of protein as a 20 year old. Consuming proteins in excess of 2g KG of body weight can put a strain on the kidneys of even a healthy person. Common causes of kidney disease include diabetes , heart disease , long term untreated high blood pressure , as well as abuse of anangesics like ibuprofen , aspirin , paracetamol and acetomenophen . Classification Digoxin toxicity is often divided into acute or chronic. The theraputic level for digoxin is 0.8 2.0 ng mL. Low serum potassium increases the risk of digoxin toxicity and cardiac dysrhythmias. The classic arrhythmia is a paroxysmal atrial tachycardia with block. Symptoms Symptoms include hypersalivation, fatigue, nausea vomiting, changes in heart rate and rhythm, loss of appetite anorexia , diarrhea, visual disturbances yellow or green halos around objects , confusion, dizziness, nightmares, agitation, and or depression, as well as a higher acute sense of sensual activities. Treatment The primary treatment of digoxin toxicity is digoxin immune Fab . Digoxin should not be given if the apical heart rate is below 60 BPM beats per minute . Annual ryegrass toxicity ARGT is the poisoning of livestock from toxin contained in bacterially infected annual ryegrass . The toxin is produced by the bacterium Rathayibacter toxicus formerly Clavibacter toxicus , which is carried into the ryegrass by the nematode Anguina funesta . ARGT was first recorded in vicinity of Black Springs, South Australia , in the 1950s and then near Gnowangerup, Western Australia , in the 1960s. The disease has spread rapidly and approximately 40,000 to 60,000 square kilometres of farmland in Western Australia and similar areas in South Australia are now infested by the ARGT causing organisms. Most ARGT related livestock losses occur during October to January, but losses have been recorded as late as April. Herbicide applications aimed to reduce ryegrass population have been successful in reducing the risk of ARGT but have undesirable effects such as rapid reduction in pasture productivity and increase in ryegrass herbicide resistance. A recently released Biological pest control biological control agent, the twist fungus , has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the risk ARGT without the need of controlling ryegrass. The first use of the twist fungus inoculum was in 1997.
